INTERESTING AND MYTHICAL

FACTS
WHERE IS IT?
TURKEY, COUNTRY THAT OCCUPIES A
UNIQUE GEOGRAPHIC POSITION, LYING
PARTLY IN ASIA AND PARTLY IN EUROPE.
THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY IT HAS ACTED
AS BOTH A BARRIER AND A BRIDGE
BETWEEN THE TWO CONTINENTS.
TURKEY IS SITUATED AT THE
CROSSROADS OF THE BALKANS,
CAUCASUS, MIDDLE EAST, AND
EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN.

IT IS AMONG THE LARGER

COUNTRIES OF THE REGION IN
TERMS OF TERRITORY AND
POPULATION, AND ITS LAND AREA
IS GREATER THAN THAT OF ANY
EUROPEAN STATE
A LITTLE ABOUT THE Modern Turkey was formed in 1923 as a result of

COUNTRY the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after its

defeat in the First World War.

Turkey is a secular state with no official state

religion; the Turkish Constitution provides for
freedom of religion and conscience. But the most
popular religion is Islam.

Turkey was one of the first countries to give

women the right to vote. Turkish women were
allowed to vote in 1926.
THE SAME GESTURE IS PERCEIVED
DIFFERENTLY IN DIFFERENT
COUNTRIES
The locals may perceive our “class”,
thumbs up, as a personal insult. Also,
the “okay” gesture is considered
vulgar,

the “V” gesture is used here by

supporters of the Kurdish
movement, and the “rocker” raised
index and little fingers - sign of local
nationalists.
BUT ONLY A SHAKE OF THE HEAD FROM
SIDE TO SIDE MEANS “DID NOT
UNDERSTAND” OR “DID NOT HEAR”

TO SAY "NO" THE TURKS CAN

THROW THEIR HEADS BACK UP,
RAISE THEIR EYEBROWS, ROLL
THEIR EYES, CLINK THEIR
TONGUE.

For more than 2000 years,

Istanbul was the capital of three
empires: Roman (then it was
called Byzantium), Byzantine
(Constantinople) and Ottoman
(Turks called and call it Istanbul).

NOT AT THE NORTH POLE,
BUT IN THE ANCIENT CITY OF

DEMRE, CITY IN TURKEY
Remember the hype around the date 12/21/2012, which
was declared the last day of our world? So, in some places
on the planet it was possible to escape from the
apocalypse. And one of these places was the mountain
village of Sherince.

PERHAPS THIS PLACE HAS

NEVER
RECEIVED AS MANY
GUESTS AS IN DECEMBER

2012. PEOPLE CAME FROM ALL

OVER THE
WORLD IN FEAR OF
TERRIBLE RUMORS AND IN
THE HOPE OF ESCAPE FROM
UNKNOWN MISFORTUNE.
THE BIBLE SAYS THAT
NOAH'S ARK ENDED HIS
JOURNEY SOMEWHERE
NEAR MOUNT ARARAT.
DERINKUYU

UNDERGROUND
CITY

THE CITY WAS BUILT 4

THOUSAND YEARS AGO. HERE,
FOR CENTURIES, PEOPLE HID
FROM THE RAIDS, ENEMIES AND
OTHER DANGERS. REACHING A
DEPTH OF ABOUT 60 METERS, IN
ANCIENT TIMES THE CITY COULD
SHELTER UP TO 20 THOUSAND
PEOPLE ALONG WITH FOOD
AND LIVESTOCK.
The city had services such as wine and oil presses, stables, a cellar, storage rooms, refectories,
churches and a religious school.
A large 55-meter ventilation shaft was apparently used as a well. The mine provided water to
both the villagers above and, if the outside world was inaccessible, those who were hiding
