Tariqa is a path, not a destination. It refers to the spiritual journey of seeking closeness to God. However, many people have started on this path but are not progressing due to various reasons. The greatest reasons holding people back include: not having a qualified spiritual guide/shaykh; failing to submit fully to one's shaykh; looking down on other spiritual saints; being misled by a fake shaykh who lacks true knowledge and righteousness; and spoiling one's good deeds through pride, improper intentions or incorrect practice.

Tariqa is not a station nor an achievement. Neither is it a position or an accolade. Tariqa is a journey, which is why it is called "Tariqa" (meaning - path). Many of us have come upon this path, but we are not moving. We are just dormant and today we will talk about the greatest reasons why. 1. Not having a Shaykh Know and may Allah bless you that this journey is not one you can thread alone. No one can attain gnosis without the help of a gnostic. You need to seek out a Shaykh who is knowledgeable, experienced, complete in overt/covert knowledge and righteous. 2. Not Submitting to Your Shaykh Some of us have a Shaykh, but we tend to look down upon them by either belittling their orders, arguing with them or even doubting them. This will eventually become a stumbling block in your journey. As far as the Shaykh meets the criteria, you are required to submit to him. 3. Looking Down on Other Saints This is very rampant and it opposes the former. As many people tend to increasingly trust their Shaykh, they become prejudicing to other saints. You are mandated to respect everyone. Muslims and non Muslims alike, how much another person's Shaykh? 4. Having a Fake Shaykh Some of us have mistaken magic for miracles and eloquence for knowledge. Just because he makes a needle come out of his nose doesn't make him a Saint. Just because he talks fast and confidently doesn't necessarily mean he is knowledgeable. The most knowledgeable ones are often the most quiet/reserved ones. Beware. 5. Spoiling our own Deeds
Many of us do great works but
we tend to spoil it by engaging in actions such as boasting and pride. Many of us spoil our works by intending for it other than should be intended. Many of us spoil our works by not doing it correctly. Take time to watch yourself.
