Permanent Teeth
By your thirteenth birthday, all your milk teeth will have
fallen and in their place you will have a new set of
teeth , the permanent teeth.
You will learn about:
Types of teeth
Incisors (cutting teeth)
• The front four teeth on each jaw.
• They have sharp edges.
• Used to cut food into small pieces.
• Incisors are shaped like small chisels.
Canines(tearing teeth)
• These are two sharp and pointed
teeth in each jaw.
• Used to tear food.
Pre-molars (cracking teeth)
• There are four pre-molars in
each jaw.
• These are broad and teeth.
• Grind food and break it into
fine pieces.
Molars (grinding teeth)
• There are six molars in each
jaw.
• Molars are broader than pre-
molars.
• They are used to crush and
grind food into a fine paste.
• Crown: The part of tooth which is seen, made up
of hard material called the enamel.
• The root of the tooth is attached to the jaw
bone.
• The cementum is a bone-like substance. It fixes
each tooth firmly to the jaw bone.

• Gums surround the tooth and cover the
jawbone.
