Lesson 3.1: Inductive Reasoning Application

A. Draw the next figure inside the box provided.

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.
B. Use inductive reasoning to determine the next three terms in the list of numbers below:

1. 50, 25, 0, -25, -50, -75, -100, -125

2. 2, 7, 12, 17, 22, 27, 32, 37

3. 2/3, 11/3, 20/3, 29/3, 38/3, 47/3, 56/3, 65/3

C. Support the conjecture inductively by showing three examples:

1. Think of a number. Add it to 5, multiply 2 and then subtract 7. What is the result?
1.) Original number: 1000
Add 5: 1000 + 5 = 1005
Multiply by 2: 1005 x 2 = 2010
Subtract by 7: 2010 – 7 = 2003
Final Result: 2003

2.) Original number: 2000

Add 5: 2000 + 5 = 2005
Multiply by 2: 2005 x 2 = 4010
Subtract by 7: 4010 – 7 = 4003
Final Result: 4003
3.) Original number: 3000
Add 5: 3000 + 5 = 3005
Multiply by 2: 3005 x 2 = 6010
Subtract by 7: 6010 – 7 = 6003
Final Result: 6003

2. Multiply 3 to the difference of a number and seven. Then add the product of the same
number and 5. Find the result.
1.) Original number: 10
Difference of a number and 7: (10-7) = 3
Multiply 3 to the Difference of a number and 7: (3)3= 9
Then add the product of the same number and 5: 9 + (10x5) = 59
Final Result: 59

2.) Original number: 20

Difference of a number and 7: (20-7) = 13
Multiply 3 to the Difference of a number and 7: (13)3= 39
Then add the product of the same number and 5: 39 + (20x5) = 139
Final Result: 139

3.) Original number: 30

Difference of a number and 7: (30-7) = 23
Multiply 3 to the Difference of a number and 7: (23)3= 69
Then add the product of the same number and 5: 69 + (30x5) = 219
Final Result: 219
