CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY

A. Background
In English to be serves as a connecting word between object and
subject. In Indonesian to be means “is” or has no meaning at all. To be
means there is or is.
Even if there are very few. But to be or also known as verb be use
very often, for example in nominal sentences. Today may be unique to
students in Indonesian, because in indonesian, we do not know auxiliary
verbs such as to be. Therefore, it seems very important for us to learn and
get to know the understanding and use of to be in English. To be or verb
be can change according to the time it occurs and also the verb aspect of a
sentence. This means to be will be different from one sentence with
another depending on whether the sentence is in present, past, or future
form, and also whether the sentence is a simple, perfect, or continuous
sentence. In addition, to be will also change according to the subject of the
sentence.

DISCUSSION

A. Understanding To Be
To be is an important component in English sentences because to
be (is, am, are) is a verb that must be in every sentence. To be is a word
that is usually included in a sentence. A kind of affirmation of a subject
and the words that follow it. Because of its importance, it is a basic
knowledge for students to understand it well.
To be is used as a link between the subject and the predicate. To be
as the main verb is usually followed by nouns, adjectives, and captions.

1. Am : used for first person singular subject : I


Example : I am your new teacher
2. Is : used if the subject is third person singular : she, he, it
Example : she is a student
3. Are : used when the subject is plural : we, you, they
Example : we are from Nunukan
