DRINKING WATER

SURVEY
ZARGHOONA FATIMA
The purpose of this survey is to evaluate the quality
quantity and purity of drinking water supply as well as their
preffrences for drinking water and methods to purify the
water for domestic use. The study covers their basic
requirements regarding supply of water and their demand.

 OBJECT:
To evaluate the quantity quality and purity of drinking water in malir
district Karachi.

 DISCUSSION:
The study was conducted to assess the drinking water quality quantity
and purity of malir district Karachi. A short and précised questionnaire
was designed to evaluate the responses of malir residents (Model
Colony, Jinnah Garden, Kala Board, 9C/awami).

 Quantity: Overall the frequency of water supply was stabilized


44% of population have adequate supply of water usually once
daily for upto 5 hours which fulfills their daily requirement or
sufficient for domestic work while 28% population gets water
once in a week for 8-12 hours , they used to store water for entire
week (tanker system). Surprisingly 24% of the population (usually
9c/awami and Jinnah garden) have 24hours of water supply. 58-
60% of the people satisfied with the frequency of water supply.
 Quality & Purity: Quality and purity of water determines in terms
of clarity taste odour/smell (physical parameters). Major
proportion of population(84%) responded that the water they
utilized for drinking has no specific odour/smell while 58%
respondents considered water with no specific taste. Physical
appearance of water was 78% clear and 22% turbid/cloudy(tap
water utilized for drinking).
 Preffrence for Mineral water/bottled water/filtered water: People
of malir district usually rely on filter/bottled/mineral water. 72%
considered mineral water as of highest quality and also confident

that the water they purchased from their nearby stores are safe
and healthy for drinking. The average consumption per person per
day was 8 glasses or more. 1500 to 3000 per month paid by the
people for water supply. Nestle and Aquafina preffered by 22-33%
of populationnwhile rest of the percentage relyed on RO plants
(25%).
 Measures to Improve Drinking Water Quality: 44% of responses
considered to purchase mineral water instead of taking any
physical measures(chlorination, filteration, boiling) or testing(lab
analysis) of their water to improve their water quality if found
unfit. While 33% preferred to boiled water or filter the water
before drinking.
 SUMMARY:
Water is essential for life, health and human dignity. Insufficient water
and contaminated water consumption usually the first and main cause
of illness. Malir district supplied with surplus amount of water there is
no such water shortage and the quality of water is also impeccable.
Consumption of drinking water relyed on mineral water with
appropriate monthly bills.
