Activity #2 IDENTIFYING BIAS

Directions: Suppose that while researching nutrition, you run across this passage. Vitamin A is
an important nutrient. It is used to make rhodopsin, a pigment in our eyes. Thus, Vitamin A is
necessary for healthy vision. People can develop night blindness if they do not get enough of
it. Carrots are an excellent source of vitamin A. Carrots should be a part of your daily diet. At
first, this paragraph seems to offer good information. Would you be more skeptical if you
learned  that it was written by people who grow carrots commercially? How would  your
opinion change? Explain your answer below.

My answer/opinion on the passage given:

In my point of view, people really need Vitamin A to have a clear

eyesight, to fight against any infections or disease, and for proper growth
of a child. And yes, carrots can be one of the eye-clarity vegetables that
can be used, but we must always remember that not only carrots but
many others like pumpkins, tomatoes, leafy vegetables, etc. that we can
plant or relieve and share with others, if there are no carrots available in
their area. In the first paragraph we can say that it gives full detailed
information for the readers, but in the second paragraph or part it is
biased. They only use the carrot as an excellent source of Vitamin A,
therefore there are plenty of vegetables that can be an excellent source of
Vitamin A that they can use to grow. Yes the passage is correct but how
about what people will imprint on or to their minds? That only carrot is a
good source for Vitamin A? No, because how about the other types of
veggies that can be also an excellent source of Vitamin A? Only carrots will
seal on their minds even though it is really appropriate and correct. In
conclusion, they can use carrot as an example or product but they must
really conclude even in the latter the other kinds of vegetables, for it will
not be considered as a biased passage or statement and not also biased
for people/readers.
Activity #3 BIAS RATING
Directions: When reading information, think about what possible bias might be distorting
the facts. You might use a scale such as the following:

1 almost totally unbiased; highly objective; accurate

2 mostly unbiased; fairly reliable
3 somewhat biased; accuracy is questionable
4 fairly biased; distorted; probably unreliable
5 totally biased; highly subjective; inaccurate

As you read the paragraph, determine the kind of bias being used. Complete
the table by writing the word or phrase that correspond to word choice, names
and title, placement and size, selection and omission, and images and video.
Below, rate the bias the author made by the author and explain your answer.

When I met with Mayor Geovelli, I noticed that he had the appearance of a hobo. He
was  unshaved and wearing dirty clothes. Maybe there was a good reason. He spoke to
me about his horrible  plan to fix our city’s roads. Anyone who knows the plan will tell
you that it will bankrupt our city. The  plan to fix our roads mostly benefits friends of
the Mayor. He plans to pay his buddies in the construction  business thousands of
dollars over the next two years. I do not want to insult anyone, but the Mayor is of
Italian decent, and we all know what reputation they have in this part of the country.
Need I remind you  of Al Capone and other Italian Mafia members?
