Plotting Irrational Numbers on the Number Line

I. Introduction:
In this topic, we’ll try to understand the representation of square root
numbers also known as irrational numbers on the number line. You will try
to deepen your understanding about plotting irrational numbers on the
number line by doing the activities in this worksheet. Read the different
exercises carefully and if there are parts of which you will encounter
difficulty, tell it to your parents for their assistance and to your teacher as
well if his/her guidance is needed. Enjoy doing your tasks!

II. MELC (with code):

Plots irrational numbers (up to a square roots) on a number line.
M7NS-Ig-4 (MELC page, 44)

III. Strategy:

A. Explore:

Let’s Remember
A. Teacher Ana ask Mark, Carl, Mary and Peter to locate numbers 4, 9,
0, and 5.5 respectively on the number line by shading it. If you were
theme, what would be your answer?

1. Mark 3. Mary

2. Carl 4. Peter
Let’s Connect
Locate the following square roots on the number line.

1. √ 49 3. √ 100

2. √9 4. √ 25

B. Learn:

Let’s Believe
We know that Irrational number are numbers that cannot be expressed as a
a
quotient , b ≠ 0 of two integers. Every irrational number may be represented by a
b
decimal that neither repeats nor terminates.

Examples of Irrational numbers:

1. √8
2. √2
3. √ √3 225
4. 1.567183906 (not repeating)
5. Π

We know also that the principal root of a number is between two integers
like √ 19, it is between 4 and 5 since √ 19 is between √ 16 and √ 25 and the square
root of 16 and 25 is 4 and 5 respectively.

With this knowledge, we can locate and plot square root on a number line.

Example. Locate and plot each square root on a number line.

1. √3
This number is between 1 and 2, principal roots of 1 and 4. Since 3 is closer to 4
than to 1, √ 3 is closer to 2. Plot √ 3 closer to 2.
√3

√1 √4
2. √ 21
This number is between 4 and 5, principal roots of 16 and 25. Since 21 is
closer to 25 than to 16, √ 21 is closer to 5 than to 4. Plot √ 21 closer to 5.

√ 21

√ 16 √ 25

3. √ 87
This number is between 9 and 10, principal roots of 81 and 100. Since 87 is
closer to 81, √ 87 is closer to 9 than to 10. Plot √ 87 closer to 9.

√ 87

5 6 7 8 9 10
√ 81 √ 100

C. Engage:

Let’s Do This
Which point on the number line below corresponds to which square
root? Write the name of the points on the space provided before each
number. E
A B C D

______ 1. √ 57
______ 2. √ 6
______ 3. √ 99
______ 4. √ 38
______ 5. √ 11
Let’s Do More
Match Column A with the point that corresponds to the given square
roots in Column B.

Column A Column B

1. √3 A.

2. π B.

3. e C.

4. √ 17 D.

5. √ 77 E.

D. Apply:

Let’s Summarize
Write the irrational numbers found on the table inside the box by
locating its correct location in the number line.

√ 72 √ 3 √1 √ 20
√ 14 √ 112 √ 45 √ 91
Let’s Find Out
Plot each irrational number on the number line.

1. √ 31

2. √ 77

3. √8
