Dollar Saturday.
Galloway says once Mays
agreed to go into the studio, he
and guitarist Teddy Leonard
presented him with nearly 100
songs they felt he’d do justice.
“He loved getting the
chance to sort through a long
list of gospel gems and lost
R&B treasures that we com-
piled with his voice in mind,”
Galloway says. “ ‘You pick ’em
and I’ll sing ’em’ was John’s
motto.”
Mays, who was born in
Dawson, Ga., in 1941 and says
he hails from “church-going
people,” discovered his love of
music singing gospel in south-
ern churches as a child.
“At the age of 15, I became
a big fan of the emerging doo-
wop vocal group scene and I
sang harmony on New York
street corners,” he says, adding
as a member of The Jive Tones,
he cut a 45 rpm recording for
the historic ABC-Paramount
label in the late ’50s.
“In the ’60s, I was singing
both R&B and gospel,” Mays
adds. “I became a member of
The Christian Soldiers and we
toured the South extensively
and recorded in 1967 for Don
Robey’s (legendary) Peacock
label (in Texas). And after
returning home to Roches-
ter in the late ’60s, I formed a
soul band called The Dynamic
Insiders and we opened for
James Brown in 1970 and ’71.”
“John Mays is a true south-
ern soul man, and his music
is as deep and true as it gets,”
Galloway says.
