The 2021-’22 season marks my second year promoting wrestling in the Gem
State of Idaho. After 25 years of promoting the Golden State of California, I
am now living in the greater Boise area of the Treasure Valley. Without a
doubt, the competition here is solid and improving each and every day. After
an outstanding showing in Fargo where Idaho produced a state record 24 All-
American honors, I look forward to this upcoming high school season, which
features a multitude of talented state champions, placers, and state qualifiers
spanning the four classifications (5A, 4A, 3A, and 2A). Below is a brief summary of the top teams,
returning state champions, All-Americans, and placers in each state classification (all wrestlers
listed at last year’s weight group). Please note that in the state of Idaho, each school is eligible to
qualify two wrestlers per weight group to their respective District Championships, which is the
qualifier to the Idaho State Championships.
The top three teams returning in the 5A classification include 2021 state team champion Meridian,
Kuna, and Coeur d’ Alene. Once again, Meridian is loaded and returns eleven state placers and
eleven qualifiers. Leading this strong contingent include 2x State Champion Cade White (Jr./138s),
State Champion Jason Mara (Soph./126s), each Fargo All-Americans, and six others placing in the
top four. Close behind is 2021 state runner-up Kuna High School. Led by returning State Champion
and 2x placer Cael Palmer (Sr./160s), the traditional state power returns a total of nine state
placers and six other qualifiers, which include state finalist Cole Currin (Soph./106s), Anderson
White (Jr./113s) and bronze medalists Zalen White (Soph./120s), Carter Torres (Sr./182s.), and
Xandr Floth (Sr./195). Rounding the top three is northern Idaho power Coeur d’ Alene High School.
The Vikings return a total of seventeen wrestlers with state experience (7 state placers and 10
additional qualifiers). The leaders include 3x State Champion Gunner Giulio (Sr./170s), State
Champion/All-American Rylan Rogers (Sr./195s), and state bronze medalists Christian Kelly
(Sr./98s). Other notable wrestlers in the 5A are returning state champions Talen Eck of Thunder
Ridge (Soph./98), Post Falls’ Tyson Barnhart (Soph./106), Timberline’s Joshua Mendoza (Sr./113),
and 2x Champion Tristian Frothinger of Eagle (Jr./120), a Fargo All-American this past summer.
The favorite in the 4A classification is 2021 state runner-up Nampa High School, followed by
Caldwell, Minico, Blackfoot, and Columbia. In 2021, Nampa placed second at state as a team and
this year return nine state placers with two additional state qualifiers. Leading Nampa is returning
State Champion/All-American Dedrick Navarro (Jr./98s) and Simon Alberto-Luna (Jr./113s), also a
returning State Champion and two-time finalist. Next comes Caldwell, who in 2021 placed 8th at
state as a team, but looks to improve this year with six returning state medalists and five other
The top two teams in the 3A classification are returning state team champions South Fremont and
runner-up Buhl. In 2022, South Fremont returns ten state medalists and eight other qualifiers.
Leading this strong group is 2x State Champion Hunter Hobbs and four others with state finals
experience. They include All-American Jaxton Packer (Soph./98s), Ryker Simmons (Jr./113s), Dillon
(Gneiting (Jr./132s), and Kash Purser (Sr./182s). Also challenging for the team title is Buhl High
School. Buhl returns eleven state medalists with the Brunson brothers, Bowen (Soph./113s) and
Riley (Soph./126s), each returning State Champions, along with nine other medalists and ten
qualifiers. Other returning 3A State Champions to watch are Fargo National Champion Kolter
Burton (American Falls), Grayson Williams (American Falls), Ezra Clemens (Fruitland), Brock Young
(Marsh Valley), as well as Gooding High School’s Hudson Rogers, Kayd Craig, and Tayten Gillette.
The overwhelming favorite in the 2A classification is New Plymouth High School. Winning the team
title in 2021, the Pilgrims return a large contingent in 2022 with ten state medalists and ten
additional qualifiers. The leaders are returning State Champions Caleb Shaw, Joel Campbell (3x),
Trent Myers (2x), and All-American Kyle Rice (3x). Other returning State Champions in the 2A are
Jake Castagento (Glenns Ferry), Hans Newby (Grace), Gage Vasquez (Firth), and double Junior All-
American Derek Mathews of Declo.
In closing, I look forward to the 2021-’22 season and expect it to be highly competitive in all state
classifications. It is still early to determine which teams rank where in the bigger scope, but the
above is a brief summary of the teams and individuals expected to challenge for the top accolades
at state based on last year’s state results (there are too many unknows at this time; incoming
freshman, injuries, transfers, and finalized line-ups). As of this writing, the following is a short list of
talented incoming freshman that are expected to impact the wrestling scene this season (Thank
you to longtime coach Kelly Bartlett for providing me this information). They are Fargo All-
American and Pan Am Gold Medalist Mathew Martino of Bishop Kelly (brother of Christopher), Koy
Orr (Buhl), Ryder Sheen (Buhl), Kaden McKenzie (Fruitland), Ryker Vail (Bonneville), Preston Sonner
(Minico), and Ryder Sequine of Post Falls (full list located on the second to last page). The road to
the state championships begins today, so stay tuned.
