Target
At the end of this activity, you will gain competence in managing time, space and resources
to provide an environment which is appropriate to the learners and conducive to learning.

Map

To reach your target, do the following tasks:

• Observe a class
• Using a checklist, find out the evident
classroom components.
• Describe how the classroom is structured
/designed to allow everyone to participate in
the learning activities.
• Relate the data in your checklist to the
learner’s behavior.
• Reflect on how classroom management
affects learning.

AN OBSERVATION GUIDE FOR THE LEARNER’S CHARACTERISTICS

Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report on the provided
space.
1. As you observe the class. Look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.
2. How many boys are there? How many girls?
3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
4. Can the learners already work independently?
5. Describe their span of attention?
6. Look into their listening skills and ability to concentrate.

Name of School: Army’s Angels Integrated School

Year Level Observed: Grade 9 – Millikan
Location of the School: 301 Salazar Street, Zone 3, Taguig City
Date of Visit: October 26, 2021

As I observe the class, I notice that the students range in age from 13 to 15. As a result,
their attitude and behavior fall somewhere between those of a child and a teenager. In their
class, there are 17 boys and 16 girls, for a total of 33 students. In the new class-conduction
setup, students only interact during synchronous classes. They are making use of Intelektool.
This app is similar to Microsoft Teams in that it contains reading materials, modules, and e-
books for each year level. Each student can work independently without the assistance of their
parents, but they should consult with their teacher if something is unclear to them. In terms of
attention span, some of them are focused on the topic or lesson, but the majority are easily
distracted by various factors. According to my observations, most of the students are paying
attention. I saw the results of their live quiz, and the majority of them received high marks.

An Observation Guide for the CLASSROOM VISIT

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books, students’
belongings, supplies, etc.)
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room?
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules?
4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (Prayer, attendance, assignment of monitors,
warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement?
6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
7. If a learner is not following instructions to a given task, what does the teacher do? (behavior
strategies)
8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)

Observation Notes:

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books, students’
belongings, supplies, etc.)

During the face-to-face era, students have access to bookshelves and lockers. There is a
cleaning supplies box, a shelf for used visual aids, and an umbrella rack. There is also a
library with books for different year levels as well as advanced college books.

2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room?

There are restrictions inside the virtual classroom now that students are in online class
and before the class begins. It is shown and shared on the screen. When speaking in front
of the camera, as well as the audience, open the camera, and mute the microphone when
they are not speaking.

3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules?

As what I have observed, they participated during the making of the classroom rules and
they’ve followed it as well.

4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (Prayer, attendance, assignment of monitors,
warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?

Before the class starts, the classroom rules are posted. There is an opening prayer lead by
a student, then they proceed to attendance checking, then lesson proper, then quiz, and
ended by a closing prayer.

5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement?

Before, their sitting arrangement is in alphabetical order. Now that they are in an online
class mode of learning, siting arrangement is not necessary but naming convention is a
must to follow.

6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?

The external or unnecessary noise that I only hear is the background noise when there are
vehicles passing, pet animals, and the noise of the crowd when one student accidentally
open the microphone, and/or comes from the teacher’s line. It causes interruption yet they
solved it quickly by muting the participant.

7. If a learner is not following instructions to a given task, what does the teacher do? (behavior
strategies)

When I observed Mr. Ondocon teaching, I noticed that when a student is not following the
instructions, he calls his attention to correct what he is doing. They solve it by
communicating, and when clarifications are needed, he is open to questions and responds
quickly.

8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)

In his class, when the students aren’t responding or the student couldn’t answer the
question that he asked, he stops for a minute and ask his students to open their camera
and talk to them that they should not be pressured in his subject. He wants them to learn
and not to pressure them.

Observation notes:
• The teacher is very approachable.
• The students are quiet and polite.
• Some are marked as tardy due to late comings.
• Their attention spans are different. Some are focused, and some are distracted.

Analysis

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners’ behavior?

The learner's behavior is influenced by classroom organization and routines, since if the
classroom and routines are well-organized, pupils will be more motivated to learn. It will
create a positive learning environment for the pupils since they will know that everything is
well-organized and that everything will go well. Students will be more productive if the
classroom is well-organized and well-equipped.

2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom organization and
routines? What theories and principles should you have in mind?

The teacher should consider the outcome of his or her planned organization and routines. It
must have a desirable and effective effect on the students' learning. To ensure that everything
runs smoothly, the teacher must be skilled at organizing and implementing procedures. The
teacher must put into practice all of the teaching principles he or she has learned, as well as
techniques, methods, strategies, philosophy, and approach to assisting students. If all of that
is realized, the students will have a good, effective classroom.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In motivating
students? Why were they effective?

Giving positive incentives to students who are doing well in class is an excellent behavior
approach for regulating their conduct. Learners will be inspired to participate in class and
will repeat their positive behaviors as a result. One of the key reasons why pupils are
motivated is because they are given encouraging remarks such as "very good" or awards.

Reflection

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade/year level do you see
yourself? What routine and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?

I envision myself as a senior high school teacher. When we meet face-to-face, I will say good
morning to them, then they should arrange their chairs, then the opening prayer, then the roll
call, then the lesson proper and recitation in between the lessons, then quiz, and finally the
closing prayer. If the class is still online, I will make it more collaborative. I'll encourage my
students to respond by asking them one-by-one and using ice breakers.

2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose these
rules?

If I am going to make rules, my rules are (face-to-face); wear proper uniform, observe proper
etiquette, approach the teacher properly, use the classroom facilities and equipment with
care, should always come early, late comers will be given reasonable punishment when
making it a habit, should listen to the teacher, and eating is not allowed. My rules (online
class); Students are encouraged to wear proper attire, camera should be opened during
recitation, off microphone when not speaking, eating is allowed as long as the camera is off,
sleeping is prohibited, attendance is a must, and interaction within the class is required.

3. Should learners be involved in making class rules? Why?

Yes, they should be, because their opinions should be respected in order to foster
communication, and we will gain insight into their motivations for improving the classroom
rules we've established.
