Topic Discussion
Chapter 4 - Technical Aspect

As soon as a new business owner has established information on prospective

consumers, their demands and the expected market share that could be gained for a
new offering, it is then essential to evaluate whether production at this level is
technically viable. The series of topics below is helpful in deciding the technical
requirements of the business.

A. Product / Service Description

A technical product/service description describes an offering in terms of its
function, organization, parts and details. It provides information designed to explicate
the uses and applications for something in technical manner.
The following are key concerns in writing a good technical product description:
1. Know the reader – The description to be used must be readable and
acceptable to the layman’s term.
2. Do not be over detailed – Eliminate all unnecessary details or descriptions,
3. Make it understandable – Keep organization simple and logical. Maintain
terminology and style consistent.
4. Proofread and edit – Check grammar and rewrite for effectiveness if
necessary.

What makes the new product or service different from others available in the market
and the explanation on its usage must be understandable. (size, shape, color, materials
used, etc.)
The BAFF Matrix
The contraction BAFF Matrix means Benefits, Advantages, Features and
Functions. This is an additional manner of product description. It provides the benefits
customers will gain using the product, the advantages when this product is used,
important features of the product and its significant functions.

B. Business / Service Process

A process is a series of action. The description of the process is the narrative of
the action. In the feasibility, the process description is a general explanation of how the
process in making the product or providing the service occurs, step by step. The basic
writing of the description of a process is simple. It consists of an introduction followed by
a depiction of each step in the process in the order in which they occur. But this
simplicity is usually disfigured by the necessity of discussing the equipment and material
used.
Process Flowchart
The process flow chart provides a visual demonstration of the steps in a process.
Flow charts are also referred to as process mapping or flow diagrams. Constructing a
flow chart is often one of the first activities of a process improvement effort because of
the following benefits:
1. An apparent understanding of the process;
2. Name non-value-added operation;
3. Cooperation and communication; and
4. Everybody on the same page.
