Task
Limestone minining (Gewinnung von Kalksstein) has been shaping nature

and urban development of Rüdersdorf since 13th century. It caused
migration flows and shaped local living and working in Rüdersdorf and in the
region beyond. At the same time, it also shaped the materiality of cities and
places where limestone was exported for construction purposes, as much as
the current companies are part of international industrial holding and therefor
part of international capital flows.
Aim of the exercise is to look beyond the local and at former and current
connections:
• How is Rüdersdorf and its industrial past and current state

part of a local, regional and global network.
• How are the systems overlapping?
• What flows, backflows and reflows are existing?

Themes and logistics:

In a team of two persons students are ask to investigate in a series of maps one of
the four themes:
1) flow of material
shaping quantities and qualities of locations here and there - locally, regionally and
globally
2) flow of capital
development of local, national and international company structures in the 19th &
20th century
3) flow of people
work & living, commuting & locating themselves etc. in the 19th & 20th century
4) flow of people
tourism, activities & targets
