AME 352 Online, HW-10

Solve the following three problems by taking advantage of 2-force and 3-force member concept (do not
consider gravity). Draw free-body diagrams if necessary. Avoid writing too many equations. Take direct
measurements (any unit) from the figures.

10-1 This mechanism is used to shear thin gauge

sheet metal. For a force of 500 N applied F
on the handle at A as shown, determine the
force generated at B. A

10-2 For a force of 450 N that acts vertically at

A, determine the resistive force that is
generated on the sliding block at B. F

10-3 For a slider-crank mechanism the following data are available:

L2 = 0.1, L3 = 0.3, L0 = 0.6 m
In the configuration shown, the angle of the crank is θ 2 = 125 degrees. A spring connects the ground
and the center of the slider block. The spring has an undeformed length of 0.5 m and a stiffness k =
1,200 N/m. The static coefficient of friction between the block and the ground is μ = 0.5. Determine
the range of values of an applied torque on the crank (link 2) in order to keep the system in static
equilibrium.

10-4 Several known forces and torques act on this four-bar mechanism in the directions shown:
FB = 10N, FC = 20N, T3 = 35Nm, T4 = 25Nm
In the configuration shown 2 = 65 o . An unknown torque acts on link (2), which keeps the system in
static equilibrium. The link lengths are provided as
L1( x ) = 4.0, L1( y) = 1.0, L2 = 2.0, L3 = 3.0, L4 = 1.5, LAC = 1.8 m
 3 = 33.7 o

(a) Apply the FBD method to find the unknown torque Tx .

(b) Apply the Power Formula to find the unknown torque Tx . You must be very clear how you
determine each term in this formula. All the terms must be identified and computed separately
before plugging them into the formula. Note: FB can be applied at B either on link 3 or on link
4.
