SHOP ROASTERS VENTING RECOMMENDATIONS & GUIDELINES

ROASTER AND CYCLONE ONLY:

This document is to reflect a manufacturer’s recommendation for the use and

arrangements of exhaust duct work connected to the cyclone of a gas fired shop roaster
and cooling tray duct work; the roaster is considered a Class III Gas appliance with
positive pressure venting.

In general, the installation has to comply with building and engineering codes and
are usually reviewed at the time of commissioning the equipment. Codes should be
reviewed by your contractor.

The roaster unit should be placed on a non-combustible surface at least three feet away
from a wall or window all the way around. The chimney must extend at least three feet
above the highest point of the roof where it passes through the roof surface and at least
two feet higher than any part of the building within a horizontal distance of ten feet. The
temperature inside this exhaust duct system during operation should not exceed 450
degrees Fahrenheit.

A single wall, Type G duct (Cooling and/or Hot Exhaust Duct) can be used if:

- The routing is straight out or straight up through a single layer metal roof, with no
combustible materials in a three foot radius.
- The ducting pipe joints must be sealed in accordance with manufacturers
requirements.
- The roaster area cannot be accessed by anybody other than the operator.

A double wall, Pressure Stack (PS) exhaust duct (Hot Exhaust Duct) can be used
if:

- The routing is straight out or straight up through a wall/roof with combustible

materials, and a clearance around this duct of at least five inches.
- The ducting pipe joints must be sealed in accordance with manufacturers
requirements.

An Internal Pressure Stack (IPS) exhaust duct (Hot Exhaust Duct) can be used if:

- There is no room for a five inch clearance in the area the duct penetrates.
- The clearance to combustible materials shall be in accordance with
manufacturer’s installation requirements.
- The ducting pipe joints must be sealed in accordance with manufacturers
requirements.

Models PS and IPS are modular, prefabricated piping systems which employ flanged
joints designed for both quick assembly and pressure-sealing capabilities.

The exhaust duct work can include no more than two (2) ninety degree elbows, and
should not exceed a total length of 25 feet.

The duct work does not have to be sloped, but an easy to access cleanout (drop leg), is
highly recommended. This cleanout can be located inside or outside.

ROASTER AND CYCLONE, WITH AFTERBURNER:

Selkirk Metalbestos is a UL Approved House:

The exhaust duct from the afterburner has an internal temperature of 1250 degrees
Fahrenheit during operation. Probat Burns recommends Selkirk Metalbestos fiber
insulated model IPS venting system. This should be designed and installed by a
certified HVAC Company. Duct located above the roof surfaces must terminate as
specified in the local building codes, or as required by NFPA 96. Joints of the inner liner
should be sealed using V-Bands and Selkirk Metalbestos High Temperature Ceramic
Joint Cement, supplied by manufacturer.

The double wall ducting shall have an outer jacket of aluminum steel; inner liner should
be type 304 stainless steel. The recommended range for the fiber insulation between
the walls is between 1 and 4 inches thick, depending on the type of roof and design
criteria.

Please Note:

These are the manufacturer’s recommendations. The local building and

engineering codes must always be consulted and adhered to for installation.

In case additional duct work, exhaust duct work system might require the
installation of a booster fan. It is highly recommended to get a stack vendor to
calculate the pressure drop across your exhaust duct work system before
installing a booster fan.
