Pocket Guide for the

Responsible PC User
This pocket guide contains basic PC
troubleshooting checklist, important
guidelines and SC-MISO &
CTI helpdesk hotlines.

This computer is preinstalled with the following


programs:

1. MS Windows 7 Professional
2. Open Office
3. eScan Anti-Virus
4. Adobe Acrobat Reader
5. Supreme Court Desktop Themes
6. Mozilla Firefox Web Browser
7. Standard MS Windows Programs (e.g., Internet
Explorer, Notepad, Calculator, etc.)
8. Legal Research Tool (Beta version - for test
purposes)

To learn more about your computer, please run the Getting


Started and Help and Support programs, which can be found
on your desktop.

To know about your unit’s safety features, as well as its warranty


coverage, please refer to the Lenovo ThinkCentre Safety and
Warranty Guide Booklet provided.
Reporting a Computer Problem

When experiencing computer problems, immediately


go through the checklist below. We can service you
more quickly if you have the information ready
beforehand.

1. Is the system on?


2. Is everything plugged in?
3. Do you see any loose or unplugged cables?
4. Does your machine have power?
5. Is there electrical power in the area?
6. Has the brightness or contrast been turned up or
down on the LCD monitor?
7. Has the power strip blown a fuse? Is it still
plugged in?
8. Has anything changed or been modified in your
system since it was last working?
9. Has the machine been moved?
10. Are others in your office experiencing the same
problem?
11. Does the problem reoccur after rebooting your
machine?
12. Are you entering your password and username
correctly?
13. Is the caps lock key on? (Note: passwords and Id’s
may be case sensitive)
14 Are you using the correct User ID for the system
you are trying to access?
15. How long have you had this problem?
16. When did your computer last work properly?

addressed each item in the checklist, please contact the
helpdesks of the Supreme Court Management
Information Systems Office (SC-MISO) and Columbia
Technologies, Inc. (CTI) at the numbers found at the
back of this leaflet.
Important Guidelines

Desktop or laptop computers issued by the SC are


subject to these guidelines. All other computers
brought in by employees are similarly covered.

The use of computers in the work area including their


operation for intranet and internet access, is for official
and authorized business purposes only. It is a privilege
granted by the SC which may be revoked at any time
for improper and inappropriate conduct. In this respect,
kindly bear in mind the following:

Please DO:

[ Observe cleanliness when using the computers.


[ Wipe the keyboard and screen with a soft, clean
and dry towel at least twice a month to prevent
dust build-up.
[ Back-up important office files and documents
stored in the computers on flash disks, Cds, DVDs
or external hard drives.
Please DON’T:

4 Eat or drink near the computer to avoid messing up


the hardware.
4 Plug or attach non-SC issued computers or
communication gadgets to the network without
proper clearance from SC-MISO.
4 Download, update or install programs from the
internet, with the exception of updates for SC-
purchased or provided programs, or those cleared
by the SC-MISO.
4 Do excessive non-work-related transactions on SC-
issued computers, including accessing of personal
emails.
4 Play computer-based games within office premises.
4 Send chain emails, especially using official email
accounts.
4 Access social networking (e.g., MySpace, Twitter,
Facebook, etc.) or peer-to-peer sites (e.g., Limewire,
Utorrent, etc.), as well as chat rooms and other
types of online forums, unless related to official
research assignments.
4 Access sexually explicit, obscene or pornographic
sites.
4 Support or tolerate software piracy.
4 Install any unlicensed or inappropriately licensed
program on any SC-issued computer, with the
exception of “freeware” or “shareware.”
4 Remove from the premises any software provided
or owned by SC, unless permitted by SC-MISO.
4 Share your computer password with anyone.
4 Engage in activities that interfere with the normal
operation of the SC’s computer network, including
activities which result in congestion, disruption,
disablement, alteration or impairment of the
network.
