Parts of the Plant Cell

Part Function
Cell Wall Made of a tough substance called
cellulose, which supports the cell.
Cell Membrane Controls the movement of
substances into and out of the cell.
Golgi Apparatus Processes and packages materials
for the cell.
Vacuole Stores food and water.
Lysosome Contains digestive enzymes that
destroy damaged organelles and
invaders.
Cytoplasm Jelly-like fluid that holds and
protects the organelles.
Nucleus It regulates the cell activity.
Contains the DNA.
Nucleolus A round structure in the nucleus
that makes ribosomes.
Ribosome Helps to synthesize proteins.
Mitochondria The “powerhouse” of the cell.
Breaks down food to produce
energy in the form of ATP.
Rough E.R. Covered in ribosomes; involved in
the production and synthesis of
proteins.
Smooth E.R. Has no ribosomes; involved in the
production of enzymes and lipids.
Chloroplast Convert light energy into relatively
stable chemical energy via
photosynthesis.
Amyloplast Stores starch.
