The Black Stone of Kaaba

     Traditions tell us that the Black Stone was originally white. The Black Stone is a sacred stone
of Heaven, which God gave to Adam. During the great floods when Noah built the ark, the stone
was lost and was cast up on the top of Mount Qubais.
     When Abraham visited his son, Ismail, who lived near the Kaaba, the Angel Gabriel appeared
and told Abraham where the Black Stone could be found. Abraham carried out the Angel’s
instruction, found the stone and incorporated in the Kaaba.
     Before the advent of Prophet Mohammad , the Black Stone was again lost and great
confusion swept over the people. When it was found, it became the subject of great conflict
between the tribes. The problem was to which tribe the Black Stone belonged and who was
responsible for the replacement in it’s proper place. A solution was finally decided between the
tribes. The person who entered the holy place at dawn on a certain day would be the final judge
of the fate of the Black Stone. The decision was not made public to the people. It happened that
Mohammad himself, before he achieved his prophethood, entered the sacred shrine first.
     Mohammad gave the judgment. A great sheet should be brought and the Black Stone should
be put on the middle of it. Representative of each of the conflicting tribes should take up the
sheet and carry it to the Kaaba. Mohammad himself should take the Black Stone and place it in
its position in the wall of the Kaaba. So, the Black Stone originated from the Stones of Heaven,
is now part of the Kaaba.
     One day Omar ibn el Khattab, the second khaliph, stood before the Stone said:
     “I know that you are a stone, even if you are from Heaven. I am kissing you only because the
holy Prophet kissed you and advised all his followers to do so”.
 Batu Hitam Ka’bah (Hajar Aswad)

Bahwa Batu Hitam (Hajar Aswad) itu pada asalnya berwarna putih. Hajar Aswad adalah
sebuah batu suci dari surga yang Allah berikan kepada Nabi Adam. Sewaktu banjir besar ketika
Nabi Nuh, batu itu hilang dan di atas Gunung Qubais.
Ketika Nabi Ibrahim mengunjungi puteranya, Ismail, yang tinggal di dekat Ka’bah,
Malaikat Jibril muncul dan memberitahu Ibrahim di mana Hajar Aswad itu dapat ditemukan.
Ibrahim instruksi Malaikat tersebut, menemukan batu itu, dan ke dalam Ka’bah.
Sebelum Nabi Muhammad saw, Hajar Aswad itu hilang lagi dan para penduduk. Ketika
ditemukan, ia menjadi sumber konflik besar di antara Masalahnya adalah milik suku manakah
batu itu dan siapakah yang berwenang untuk menempatkan kembali batu itu pada tempatnya
yang pantas. Sebuah solusi akhirnya diputuskan di antara suku-suku tersebut. Orang yang
pertama kali memasuki tempat suci itu (Ka’bah) pada suatu hari tertentu akan menjadi nasib
Batu Hitam tersebut. Keputusan itu tidak kepada para penduduk. Kebetulan ternyata Muhammad
saw lah, yang memasuki pertama kali.
Muhammad saw memberikan keputusannya. Sebuah harus dan Batu Hitam itu harus
diletakkan di tengah-tengahnya. Perwakilan dari masing-masing suku yang bertikai harus
mengangkat kain itu dan membawanya ke Ka’bah. Muhammad saw sendiri yang harus
mengambil batu itu dan meletakkannya ditempatnya di dinding Ka’bah. Maka Hajar Aswad,
yang asalnya adalah batu dari syurga itu, sekarang merupakan bagian dari Ka’bah.
Suatu hari Umar ibn Khattab, sang khalifah kedua, berdiri di depan Hajar Aswad dan
berkata: “Aku tahu bahwa kamu hanyalah sebuah batu, meskipun kamu berasal dari syurga. Aku
menciummu hanyalah karena Nabi yang suci telah menciummu dan menganjurkan semua
ummatnya untuk melakukan itu juga”.
