Aluminum Dome Roof Installation: Chevron Specification TAM-EG-4812
SPECIFICATION TAM-EG-4812
ALUMINUM DOME ROOF INSTALLATION
CONTENTS
1.0 SCOPE
This specification covers the requirements for the materials, design, fabrication, and installation of
aluminum dome roofs on cylindrical storage tanks.
Design Basis and Documents: The tank roof design, materials, fabrication, and erection shall
conform to the documents listed below. In case of conflict, the governing order shall be as follows:
2.3 API Standard 650, latest edition, with supplements and appendices.
3.1 The dome shall be spherical and conform to the dimensions specified.
3.2 The dome structure shall be a fully triangulated space truss complete with noncorrugated
closure panels.
3.3 The dome shall be clear-span and designed to be self-supporting from the shell with primary
horizontal thrust contained by an integral tension ring.
3.4 The dome shall be designed to handle thermal expansion and contraction from 35°F to 180°F
unless otherwise specified.
3.5 The dome frame and panels shall be designed in accordance with the "Specifications for
Aluminum Structures," as published by the Aluminum Association, and designed for full dead
load plus the following live load conditions:
3.5.1.1 Symmetrical Live Loading: Design shall permit a live load of twenty-five
pounds per square foot (25 lb/sq ft) in accordance with ANSI A58.1, latest
revision, published by the American National Standards Institute, Inc.
3.5.1.2 Live Loading: Design shall permit a reduction of the live load by fifty
percent (50%) over one-half (1/2) of the dome.
3.5.1.3 Wind Loading: Unless specified otherwise, wind loads shall be per ANSI
A58.1 with a basic wind velocity of 100 mph.
3.5.1.4 Seismic Loading: Design shall permit seismic loads anticipated in the local
earthquake zone. The loads shall be calculated per API 650 Appendix E.
3.5.2 Panel Design Load: The panel shall be designed to handle two (2) concentrated
loads of two hundred fifty pounds (250 lb) each applied simultaneously on two (2)
adjacent one square foot (1 sq ft) areas of the panel.
3.6 The dome surface paneling shall be designed as a water tight system under all design load
conditions.
3.7 Edges of the panels shall be covered, sealed, and firmly clamped in an interlocking manner to
prevent slipping or disengagement under all load and temperature changes.
All materials shall meet or exceed the following ASTM standards. Material substitutions shall be
acceptable to Company and must be approved prior to fabrication and installation.
4.4 Fasteners: 7075-T73 anodized aluminum, double cadmium-plated steel, or Series 300
stainless steel.
5.1 The new aluminum dome roof shall include the entire roof deck, all supporting trusses,
girders, braces and brackets, and all specified appurtenances and modifications of existing
appurtenances made necessary by the configuration of the aluminum dome roof, unless
otherwise specified.
5.2 The Company will specify if there will be a doorsheet cut in the shell and if the internal
appurtenances will be removed so that the Contractor can construct the dome roof on the tank
bottom.
The Contractor shall supply all appurtenances unless otherwise specified by the Company.
6.1 Staging Support: The aluminum dome roof shall have an external staging support installed in
the center of the roof on tanks of 20-foot diameter or greater (the breather nozzle will be used
as a staging support for tanks less than 20 feet in diameter).
6.2 Breathers: Unless otherwise specified, the Contractor shall calculate the size and number of
breathers on the basis of the maximum filling and feeding rates indicated on the data sheet
plus a maximum daily temperature variation of forty degrees (40°) Fahrenheit. Copies of the
calculations shall be furnished to the Company for review before start of work. Flanged
breather nozzles shall be installed equivalent to the design specified in API 650, Section 3.8
with a baffle plate installed per Company Standard Drawing GA-D1026. Location of the first
breather installed on the roof shall be as close to the center of the roof as possible and on a
line between the center of the roof and the gaging platform. Should a second breather be
required, it shall be installed directly opposite the first breather.
Breather/vacuum and pressure settings shall be one-half ounce (1/2 oz) per square foot.
6.3 Emergency Pressure/Vacuum Relief Hatches: The aluminum dome roof shall have one or
more 24-inch emergency pressure/vacuum relief hatches installed. The number shall be
calculated by Contractor so as to handle the same function as the breather(s) except that the
set pressure/vacuum shall be three-quarters ounce (3/4 oz) per square foot. The hatch
assembly shall consist of a standard API 650 24-inch roof manway plus the emergency hatch
cover. The cover will be provided by the Company.
6.4 Autogage System: The aluminum dome roof shall have an autogage tape guide with float
guide wire anchors installed. The Company will provide pipe, tape elbows, anchors, float,
float guide wire, and autogage tape. The Contractor shall install this equipment. A roof
manway equivalent to that shown on Drawing GC-D78705 shall be installed in a location so
that it can be used as a float inspection hatch.
6.5 Sample Hatch: The aluminum dome roof shall have an 8-inch sample hatch assembly. The
assembly shall consist of (1) a flanged roof nozzle equivalent to the design specified in API
650, Section 3.8, and (2) a funnel hatch. The Company will provide the funnel hatch and
cover which the Contractor shall install. The Company may specify as an alternate, a flanged
aluminum hatch cover in lieu of the funnel hatch with cover.
The height of the top of the sample hatch shall be 3 feet above the deck. The hatch should be
installed a minimum of 3 feet from the shell.
6.6 Nonfloating Swing Line Cable Guides: Aluminum dome roof tanks with nonfloating swing
lines shall have a roof-mounted cable guide system, equivalent to that shown in Company
Standard Drawing GC-D78883, for each swing line.
6.7 Gager's Platform: The aluminum dome roof shall have a gager's platform attached to the
existing stairway landing equivalent to that shown in Company Standard Drawing GF-D99639.
6.8 Gagewell: An 8-inch slotted or solid gagewell equivalent to that shown in Company Standard
Drawing GC-D99763 shall be installed if specified by the Company. The top of the gagewell
shall be 3 feet 6 inches above the deck and 3 feet from the shell.
7.1 New operating capacity for the tank. The full filling height for aluminum dome roof tanks will
be 6 inches below the bottom edge of the lowest rafter or support.
8.1 The Contractor shall furnish a detailed erection schedule for the tank roof within fifteen (15)
days after award of contract, to include:
8.2.1 Contractor shall submit to Company for approval, prior to executing any of the work
of this specification, three 8-1/2" x 11" or 11" x 17" copies of all drawings showing
dimensions, sizes, thicknesses, gages, materials, finishes, and joint attachment and
erection procedures.
8.2.2 The Contractor shall furnish drawings detailing the aluminum dome equivalent to the
appurtenances specified in API 650 within thirty (30) days after award of contract.
8.2.3 A complete set of design calculations for the dome specified, signed by a Registered
Professional Engineer, shall be submitted to the Company prior to the start of any of
the work of the specification.
