ESSAY 1
My Journey as a HUMSS Student
Curly Bragais
The HUMSS strand is frequently viewed as the easiest academic strand since the
specialized subjects we take seems to be easy. However, not having any Math or Science
subjects does not automatically mean that it's easy. As a student of the HUMSS strand, being
told as "HUMSS ka lang" is really annoying because trust me our strand is not a piece of cake
like what you're thinking.
We write A lot. Essay there, essay here, essay everywhere! Our writing skill needs to
be in shipshape to meet the standards or rubric of the teacher. By writing a bunch of essays,
we improve both our grammar and reasoning.
When you thought you’ve dodged math, well think again? Some of the HUMSS
students chose this strand because of the fact that there is no additional Math subject, unlike
STEM or ABM, be prepared for the Math.
Researching, since we need to write a lot of essays and I already mentioned that we
read a lot, those two facts implies that we HUMSS students are required to do research
intensively. Journal articles are becoming our new bff’s and google. Tiring as it may seem,
but I know it’s just a way for prepping us for more research in the near future. (And my
researching skills are getting better and better by the minute).
History may turn us back in time, but Archaeology and Geology takes us onto an
unending journey. Being able to learn about different cultures without even interacting with
them personally is really fascinating. We get to understand their different beliefs and
traditions, which for me is the best part of it. HUMSS may seem the easiest, but you can trust
me that it is the most interesting among the academic strands.

Relevance of Social Studies Amid COVID- 19

SOCIAL studies is a subject some students consider boring.

It is stated in the Social Studies K-12 Curriculum Guide of the Department of

Education that the goal of teaching it is to develop student’s understanding, regarding
primary ideas of historical, geographical, political and economic issues. The curriculum gives
emphasis on understanding, rather than memorizing the concepts and terminologies. Thus,
students must create their own meaning about the topics they are studying and to be able
to contextualize it in real life scenarios in making it meaningful and purposeful to himself
and to the society in which they live.

Furthermore, social studies is study of people, group, community, members of the

society and the world on how they live, their relationship and interaction with the
environment, their beliefs and culture to build Filipino nationhood and to understand it by
using the skills in research, investigation, analysis, creative thinking, intelligent decision-
making, ability to use the natural resources and effective communication.

The following are themes in said subject from grades 1 to 12: 1) people,
environment and society 2) time, continuity and change 3) culture, identity and nationhood
4) rights, responsibility and citizenship 5) power, authority and governance 6) production,
distribution and consumption and 7) regional and global relations.

How will these concepts be relevant amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, especially in the
Philippines?

It is important we understand our relationship with the environment and society.

People have duties and obligations towards their fellow citizens such as protecting and
respecting each other’s rights. Solidarity is also important during this crisis. For example, we
can see people from different places in the Philippines that have started to build community
pantries that will help people especially those who are in need.

Understanding the past in relation to what is happening in the present entails the
concept of cause and effect. By having the skills in identifying this, people would be able to
connect the pieces of information from the past in understanding why we are like this
today? In analyzing the present situation, people can ask — “How did the people in the past
respond to the Spanish flu?”, “What are the causes of the rising cases of Covid-19 today?”
and “What are the effects of this alarming rate to every individual Filipinos?” Asking these
questions will make us reflect on the things happening around us.

During this time, our culture has changed many aspects of our lives. How will we
cope with this pandemic? There will be adjustments. How can we help our countrymen in
employing the culture of bayanihan in helping others rise?

With the implementation of community quarantines, many issues sprung up,

including human rights violations. In this light, people have the responsibility in upholding
their rights by being active, engaged and participative citizens in tackling local, national and
global issues. It is important to be involved in these issues because we are greatly affected
by what is happening in our country.

Our government has many powers, roles and functions. They can be used in
addressing and resolving our problems. The concepts of power, authority and governance
can be used to analyze whether these things effectively serve the best interest of its
constituents.

This pandemic affected our economy. It pains the lives of many people. Millions lost
their jobs and majority trying to survive. Financial literacy, understanding inflation and the
importance of saving money are things people understand in learning economics.

Businesses are affected, quarantine protocols restricted distributing goods and

services and limited consumption affected both consumers and sellers.

Although the DepEd formulated most essential learning competencies where

teachers are prescribed to follow, these themes in social studies curriculum in basic
education enumerated above can be contextualized for students to connect to their personal
experiences. In discussing these historical, social, economic and political issues, it is vital for
students to develop and demonstrate the 21st-century learning skills such as critical
thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication skills in order to become functionally
literate and developed Filipinos to become nationally and globally competitive.

We can say social studies is relevant in addressing concerns of our time and making
sense of what is happening around. Amidst all the issues we are facing, we all have
responsibility towards it. And social studies is a subject that will compel you to realize and
do something about it.
