IGCSE Section 1 – Test Yourself


The following notes summarise the whole of section 1. The notes are missing
some key words and it is your job to fill them in. Select the correct word from the
lists provided. Words must only be used once.

A) Computer systems are made up of two parts: hardware and software.

B) Hardware is a Physical object that can be touched and picked up.

C) The motherboard is used to plug all other components into the system. It uses a

Bus Network to allow components to communicate.

D) The CPU is known as the ‘brains’ of the computer. It carries out processing and
turns data into information

E) Computer hardware is useless without software as it needed to give out instructions.

F) There are two types of software called application software and system software .

G) A computer that has a full size keyboard and monitor and is usually found in the home is known
as a desktop computer.

H) Hardware such as a mouse and keyboard are used to get data into the computer and are known
as input devices.

I) Once data has been entered into the system it is passed to the CPU for processing

J) Once data has been processed, the results are passed onto an output device such as a
monitor or printer.

K) ROM is permanent memory that is used to store instruction that are needed to
start up the computer.

L) RAM is fast temporary memory that is used to store data and applications that are

currently in use. It is sometimes also called primary memory.

M) RAM memory loses its contents when the power is switched off because it is volatile .

N) ROM memory does not lose its contents when the power is switched off because it is
non-volatile

O) The way in which users communicate with a computer is known as an interface .

P) An operating system that uses graphics and menus is known as a GUI .

Q) A command line interface requires users to type commands at the Command Prompt.

R) Operating systems (such as GUI’s) that use windows, icons , menus and

pointers are known as Wimp interfaces.

S) Non-Volatile storage devices that we use to save our work are sometimes known as
Secondary memory.

T) Post-WIMP interfaces found on devices like iPads, iPods and mobile phones make use of
touch screen technology that allows us to use our fingers to select icons and menus.

U) Post-WIMP interfaces allow us to carry out Pinching rotating and swiping techniques.

V) The technology that allows users to store documents, programs and data on the Internet is
known as Cloud computer

W) Streaming music is where users play music directly from the Internet rather than downloading it
to their computers.

X) Documents created using Google Docs are stored Remotely on the Internet. This means
they can be accessed anywhere and at any time.

Y) An E-Reader is used to view E-books.

Z) Two advantages of E-books are that they Save Paper and are cheaper to buy.
