Quarter 1 – Module 2:
The Scientific Research

This teacher made instructional material was developed to

help students enhance the previous project study or develop a new
scientific research project. This will serve as an avenue for Grade 8
students to demonstrate much higher level of competence, mastery
and proficiency in scientific investigations through continuous
development of the research project. Recommendations,
comments, and suggestions is appreciated.

What I Need Know
Scientific research is a method or procedure involving the control or manipulation of
conditions for the purpose of studying the relative effects of various treatments applied
to members of sample, or of the same treatment applied to members of different
samples.(Good,p.216)

Scientific research is the systematic investigation of scientific theories and

hypotheses. A hypothesis is a single assertion, a proposed explanation of something
based on available knowledge, for something yet to be explained. One that is subject to
further experimentation.

Content Standards

The learner demonstrates understanding of the nature of research and research

processes, different standard rules in the conduct of research, which are necessary in
the preparation of the system of research documentation.

Performance Standard

The learner should be able to make a portfolio of abstracts of researches in his/her

field of interest.

After completing this module, you are expected to:

a. Identify the types of research.

b. Differentiate each type of research to one another.
c. Categorize research in terms of features

What I Know
(Pre – Test) Directions: Read each statement carefully and select from the options of
you think the correct answer.

1. This is also called as “fundamental research” or “pure research”?

A. Basic Research C. Developmental Research

2. This is a decision – oriented research involving the application of the steps of the
scientific method in response to an immediate need to improve existing
practices?
A. Basic Research C. Developmental Research

What’s New?
Lesson 1 – Types of Scientific Research

There are three types of research. These are (1) basic research, (2) applied
research and (3) developmental research.

1. Basic Research

This is called as “fundamental research” or “pure research”. It seeks to

discover basic truths or principles. It is intended to add to the body of scientific
knowledge by exploring the unknown to extend the boundaries of knowledge as well as
to discover new facts, and learn more accurately the characteristics of known without
any particular thought as to immediate practical utility.

Some examples of basic are as follows:

Examples of Basic Research

Robert Boyle’s law states that “If the
temperature remains constant, the volume of a
confined gas is inversely proportional to the
pressure.” (Rebollos, 1986)

Jacques Charles’ Law states that “The Aristotle Archimedes discovered what is known
volume of a dry gas is directly proportional as Archimedes Law of Buoyancy. He stated
to Kelvin temperature, provided the that “An object in a liquid will experience a
pressure remains constant.” (Williams, buoyant force just equal to the weight of the
1980) liquid displaced.” (Manlulu and Garcia, 1985)

Robert Hooke’s law states that “Within the Isaac Newton conducted pure research known
limit of perfect elasticity, strain is directly as Newton’s Law of Motion which states that “A
proportional to stress.” (Manlulu, 1985) body at rest remains at rest and a body in
motion will continue to move with same velocity
in a straight line unless acted upon by an
external force.” (Robollos et al., 1986)

2. Applied Research Source: www.marketing.com

This type of research involves seeking new applications of scientific knowledge

to the solution of a problem, such as the development of a new system or procedure,
new device, or new method in order to solve the problem.
In other words, applied research produces knowledge of practical use to man.
Examples are as follow:

Fish waste pollution Gas Shortage

3. Developmental Research

This is a decision-oriented research involving the application of the steps of the

scientific method in response to an immediate need to improve existing practices. This
process involves practitioners who study a certain problem in vivo and from such
experience draw their decisions and development as well as evaluation. In other words,
if a researcher continues to find practical applications from theoretical knowledge and
use this existing knowledge to produce useful products it is called developmental
research.

ACTIVITY 3: WHAT’S THE LATEST?

Learning Competency: Categorize research in terms of features and relevance.

Code: SSP_RS8-TSR-Ia-2

Directions: As young researchers, you act as an investigator to solve a societal

problem (e.g. COVID – 19 pandemic). Create a newspaper or an article in a magazine
to make news/article about this problem. Then, categorize this research investigation in
terms of features and relevance.
