APPOINTMENT of Adult Education Tutors (Part Time)

MEMORANDUM OF INFORMATION
ADULT EDUCATION TUTORS (PART-TIME) – REF: AES/PTT

Applications are invited for a panel of adult education tutors (part time) for the academic year 2020/2021 which
may be filled at Fixed Term Specific Purpose level:

Subjects: Accredited and non-accredited NFQ levels 1-4:

 Adult Numeracy (numbers in everyday life; quantity and number etc.)


 Adult Literacy (basic literacy skills in everyday life)
 Communications QQI Levels 3 and 4
 Computers/IT including digital media/animation/social media/making applications on line
 Wellbeing/ mindfulness /relaxation/Tai Chi / Pilates / Yoga
 Mathematics
 QQI Level 3 and 4
 Leaving Certificate Ordinary Level
 Early Childhood Care and Education, Level 5
 Gardening/Horticulture (working on small community based gardening projects)
 ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages, specifically, CEFR A0 (absolute beginners/literacy), A1 and A2
 Racial Justice (for accredited and non accredited courses addressing social justice, anti-racism, equity and
discrimination
 Social Justice (for accredited and non accredited courses in social justice, equality and human rights)

Nature of the work
City of Dublin ETB Adult Education Service is seeking suitably qualified persons to facilitate the learning of adult
students. Our educational programmes are targeted at all lifelong learners in the City of Dublin, with a targeted focus
on individuals and groups that experience particular and acute barriers to participation in adult learning. The successful
candidate will have an awareness of the diverse needs of adult students re-engaging with education. The successful
candidates will be able to communicate well and motivate their students. Lesson planning and assessment are integral
parts of the work. The classes may be delivered as part of education programmes in a wide range of settings including
in City of Dublin ETB Adult Education centres; education programmes in CE Drug Rehabilitation Schemes; in a wide
variety of community based settings; as part of intensive literacy programmes; in conjunction with other statutory or
community organisations etc.

Tutors are expected to participate in ongoing professional development, and to keep up to date with new
developments in the field.

The tutor will report to the Adult Education Officer and under the supervision of the Adult Education Officer or the
Adult Literacy Organiser / Community Education Facilitator will undertake a range of the following duties.
Educational Responsibility
Tutors should:
 submit a scheme of work and a lesson plan before the commencement of the course
 plan and prepare appropriate teaching and learning materials pertinent to the course/syllabus
 monitor and assess students work and progress
 manage the learning environment effectively
 maintain accurate records
 meet a range of student educational needs in their teaching
 set, examine and give feedback on assignments
 have a duty of care to the students
 be committed to his or her own professional development
Administrative responsibilities
Tutors should:
 maintain a register in accordance with Department of Education and Skills requirements
 manage data in accordance with GDPR principles and requirements
 complete any paperwork requested by CDETB involving the assessment and progression of students
 in accordance with CDETB Quality Assurance, have a planned, coordinated approach to the delivery of QQI
modules. This includes, providing information on assessment to students, writing assessment briefs, marking
assignments, giving feedback to students, maintaining student information in a secure manner, storing all
relevant work and documentation in a safe place and keeping to time lines.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
1. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
NFQ level 7 qualification
Recognised ELT qualification (applies to applicants for ESOL)
Experience of teaching adults especially in adult literacy and adult community settings
Experience of preparing students for QQI certification is desirable (where appropriate)
Experience of teaching diverse groups of adult learners, particularly vulnerable learners experiencing disadvantage

2. DURATION:
This is a part-time position initially for a 12-month period. (Teaching hours offered are normally in the range of
2 to 8 hours per week.)

3. SALARY:
The successful candidates will be paid in line with the current part-time tutor rate.

4. KEY AREAS OF THE INTERVIEW:


Candidates may be asked to complete a task (e.g. prepare sample lesson plans) in advance of the interview.
Candidates should note that questions relating to the following four key areas will form part of the interview.

1. Knowledge and understanding of teaching your subject

The candidate should have experience of designing and delivering courses in the applied for subject area, to meet
the diverse needs of adults re-engaging with education. Where applicable, candidates should have experience of
preparing students for certification in QQI modules.

The candidates should demonstrate planning and record keepings skills including:
 assessment of students
 planning lessons (short-term and long-term planning)
 maintaining appropriate records in accordance with good teaching practice and legislative requirements
 developing materials for teaching and assessment purposes
 developing programmes
2. Knowledge and experience working within an adult and community education context
The candidate should demonstrate a secure knowledge of key principles of adult education and how these apply
working in diverse and/or disadvantaged community contexts. It is desirable that candidates can speak with
experience/understanding of working with students with literacy difficulties.

3. Ability to work on your own initiative


The candidate should demonstrate capacity to work in non-supervised settings and an ability to plan and organise
work over a period of time.

4. Interpersonal skills
The candidate should demonstrate an understanding of the implications for their practice of working with
students from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

GARDA VETTING:
CDETB is registered with the National Vetting Bureau (NVB) which provides a disclosure service for organisations
who have staff positions which may involve regular unsupervised access to children and vulnerable adults. As part of
the Board’s recruitment and selection process, offers of employment to all posts will be subject to NVB disclosure.
All staff must have current Garda Vetting prior to taking up duty.
CDETB reserves the right to re-vet all staff employed in positions which entail working with children and vulnerable
adults at any time during their employment.
