1 Scope

1.1 This specification defines the mandatory requirements for design, fabrication
inspection and testing of metal enclosed isolated phase, self cooled, bus
assemblies suitable for indoor and outdoor applications in 60 Hertz power
systems.

1.2 This specification defines the basic features of the equipment required and takes
precedence over all other standards and codes referenced. The equipment
manufacturer shall ensure that the latest issues of the applicable standards are
adhered to, in addition to this specification.

2 Conflicts and Deviations

2.1 If there are any conflicts between this specification and associated purchasing,
project or engineering documents, this specification shall take precedence.

2.2 Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company
or Buyer Representative for review and approval.

4 Vendor Experience

The specified metal enclosed bus assemblies shall be supplied by a Vendor qualified by
experience in manufacturing the units proposed. To qualify, the Vendor or his licensee
must have manufactured at the proposed location of manufacture at least 10 units with
identical or equivalent performance characteristics (Voltage, rated continuous current,
short circuit duty and enclosure integrity). The metal enclosed bus assemblies must
have been in service for at least 5 years and must be performing satisfactorily. Details
and location of operation shall be provided to Saudi Aramco upon request. In addition,
the Vendor shall disclose each proposed design, manufacturing procedure, component,
or assembly that does not have at least 2 years satisfactory field operating experience in
similar service.

5 Information Required with Quotation

The Vendor shall supply the following information with the Quotation. This is in
addition to the information required within the Quotation Request or Purchase Order
Documents.

5.1 Fully completed DATA SCHEDULE.

5.2 Certified Design Test Certificates for the tests performed as outlined in
ANSI/IEEE or IEC standards as necessary for the equipment to be purchased as
specified in the DATA SCHEDULE.

5.3 User's List of the same equipment which has been in service for a minimum of
five (5) years. The list should indicate as a minimum:
a) User company name and address

b) Installation site
c) Date of installation

5.4 The Certified Design Test Certificates mentioned above shall be from, or
endorsed by, an independent testing laboratory and shall provide the Buyer with
clear, traceable evidence that the subject tests were performed.

5.5 Detailed current carrying capacity calculation report.

5.6 Electrodynamic strength Analysis of the bus duct system.

5.7 Bus duct enclosure forces produced at support points.

6 Service Conditions

6.1 Metal enclosed bus assemblies shall be suitable for indoor and/or outdoor
applications. Unless otherwise specified, it shall be suitable for continuous
operation at locations up to an altitude of 1000 meters.

6.2 Metal enclosed bus assemblies supplied under this specification shall be suitable
for use in locations that are subject to sand and dust storms, fog, and airborne
contaminants, including NaCl (Sodium Chloride) to 300 ppm and MgCl
(Magnesium Chloride) to 50 ppm.

6.3 Metal enclosed bus assemblies used outdoor shall be suitable for continuous use
in locations under the following ambient temperature:
1) Average monthly normal maximum (hottest month): 45°C;
2) Enclosure Internal Temperature Rise Due To:
a) Solar effects : 8°C
b) Internal Heat : XX°C Vendor supplied data
Total ambient : 45° C +8°C + XX°C

6.4 Metal enclosed bus assemblies shall operate and perform satisfactorily in the list
service conditions without exceeding the hot spot temperature limits in IEC 60298
or ANSI/IEEE C37.23.

7 General Requirements

7.1 All documentation shall be in the English language.

7.2 The metal enclosed bus shall fully comply with either “NA Supplement” or the
“IEC Supplement”. Metal enclosed bus built utilizing a mixture of standards is
unacceptable.

7.3 Nominal bus voltage and current ratings shall be as per the data schedule and
correspond to the recommended standard rating as per ANSI/IEEE or
IEC standards.

7.4 Basic Insulation Levels (BIL) and power frequency withstand voltage levels
shall be as per the data schedule.

7.5 Isolated bus assemblies shall be non-ventilated, self-cooled, totally metal-


enclosed, water tight, weather proof and rigidly constructed. This includes all
required transitional hardware for termination to supply and load equipment.

7.6 Each phase conductor shall be enclosed by an individually grounded metal


housing separated from adjacent conductor housings by an air space

8 Construction

8.1 Enclosures

8.1.1 Enclosures (bus housing) shall be fabricated from non-magnetic stainless


steel or aluminum alloy to limit induced current losses and circulating
currents by breaking the magnetic path. Prefabricated “sandwich-type”
constructed metal enclosed bus assemblies are not acceptable.

8.1.2 Enclosures for metal enclosed bus assemblies shall be watertight and
weatherproof. Top cover joints and joints with end flanges shall be
gasketed and protected with a metallic sealing strip. Gasketing material
for bus runs with outdoor portions shall be suitable for an ambient
temperature as defined in Section 6.

8.1.3 All sections of isolated phase bus shall be water and air tight. A dry air
pressurizing system shall keep all sections of the enclosure free from
moisture. Suitable alarms shall be provided on loss of pressure.

8.1.4 Enclosures shall have removable covers for access to the bus joints and
other internal devices.

8.1.5 All joint faces in the metal enclosed bus assemblies shall be temporarily
sealed before shipping to prevent contamination and corrosion to internal
components during shipping and storage prior to installation.

8.1.6 Provision for external hangers or supports for metal enclosed bus
assemblies as required shall be provided. The manufacturer shall
determine forces produced at the support points by the bus enclosure and
recommend location and type of supports required for the bus enclosure.

8.1.7 When specified in the data schedule, a sun/rain shield shall be provided
on outdoor sections of the metal enclosed bus assembly. The shield shall
be a minimum of 150 mm above the metal enclosed bus assembly and
extend the length and width of the outdoor section of the enclosure.

8.2 Bus Conductors

8.2.1 All phase and neutral (where required) buses shall be constructed of
electrical grade high conductivity copper bar and shall include transition
busing to other equipment. Cable is not acceptable for power or neutral
busing.

8.2.2 Buses shall be full size and continuous throughout. Tapered bus sizing is
prohibited.

8.2.3 Bus conductors shall be insulated. All insulating material shall be flame
retardant, non-hygroscopic and non-tracking in the presents of corona.
Insulation shall be Class B (130C.)

8.2.4 All bus bar connection surfaces shall be silver plated to maintain low
resistance without the use of joint compounds.

8.3 Bus Connections

8.3.1 Connectors shall be welded to both ends of the bus conductor to form an
integral part of the bus. All power bus connections shall be bolted with a
minimum of four (4) bolts (two for each bus section). The connecting
hardware shall be a minimum of 5/8 inch silicon bronze, ½ inch grade 5
stainless steel, or ½ inch grade 5 carbon steel with yellow zinc chromate
or cadmium plated bolts, nuts, flat washers, and lock washers. The lock
washers shall be either dished (conical) spring washers or split lock-
washers. The Vendor shall recommend torque values for all fastening
hardware.

8.3.4 Flexible expansion joints to allow for the expected expansion of


conductors carrying rated current are required for straight horizontal

metal enclosed bus assemblies that exceed 15.2 meters. This applies to
indoor and outdoor metal enclosed bus assemblies.

8.3.3 All connection surfaces shall be silver plated.

8.4 Supporting Insulators

8.4.1 Bus conductor assembly shall be rigidly supported on insulators within


the enclosure and shall be braced as necessary to withstand mechanical
and thermal effects without damage or deformation resulting from an
Asymmetrical short circuit current as specified in the Data Schedule.

8.4.2 The bus insulation and insulating supports shall be made of flame
retardant, track resistant, non-hygroscopic materials. Insulators shall be
wet process porcelain post type insulators and meet IEC 60168 or
ANSI/IEEE C29.9. The interface between the bus support insulator and
the bus shall be constructed to eliminate series air gaps.

8.5 Grounding

8.5.1 A ground bus bar (if specified in the data schedule) shall be made of
copper and extend the entire length of the bus assembly.

8.5.2 The metal enclosed bus enclosure shall be designed to be used as a


ground bus (conductor) and must have the same short circuit withstand
rating as the main bus conductors.

8.5.3 The metal enclosed bus assembly shall have a silver or tin plated copper
grounding pad on each end for external ground connections. Pads shall
be sized for the rated ground fault current.

8.5.4 All gasket connections shall be bridged by grounding conductors.


The metal enclosure shall be electrically continuous.

8.6 Equipment Connections

8.6.1 The Manufacturer shall provide and coordinate the design of all
necessary connection fittings to associated equipment such as
transformers and generators. This shall include all splice plates, gaskets,
and hardware as required for the particular location as described by the
Buyer in the Purchase Order.

8.6.2 Connection to transformers and generators shall be through laminated or


braided flexible connections with a minimum of four (4) bolts (two at
each end of each connection).

8.7 Space Heaters shall be specified as per VENDOR standards and recommendation.

8.8 Wall/Floor Penetrations

8.8.1 Metal enclosed bus assemblies shall contain all necessary provisions for
wall, roof or floor entrance to the building.

8.8.2 Wall/floor openings shall have a metal frame with drilled flange
connection between the outside of the enclosure and the wall/floor.

8.8.3 A vapor/flame resistant internal barrier shall be provided at all points


where the enclosure penetrates the interior and exterior walls/floors.
Unless otherwise specified, this barrier shall have a 2 hour fire rating.

8.9 Painting

8.9.1 External surfaces of bus enclosures shall be painted. Finish color shall be
light gray.

8.9.2 Paint system for enclosure located outdoors shall conform to ANSI/IEEE
or IEC requirements.

8.9.3 Paint system for enclosures located indoors shall conform to ANSI/IEEE
or IEC requirements.

8.10 Nameplates

8.10.1 Nameplates shall be permanently attached to Metal Enclosed Bus


assemblies. The nameplates shall be abrasion resistant, stainless steel
and attached with stainless steel hardware (nut and bolt). Entries shall be
marked by etching, engraving or other permanent marking method.

8.10.2 The nameplates shall be in the English language according to American


usage.

8.10.3 One standard equipment nameplate shall be provided with the following
information:
a) Manufacturer's name
b) Date of manufacture
c) Serial Number
d) Maximum voltage
e) Rated continuous current
f) Insulation (BIL) level

8.10.4 The following information shall be provided on a standard nameplate or


a separate nameplate:
a) Manufacturer's plant location
b) Buyer's Purchase Order number
c) Manufacturer's order reference number
d) Year of manufacture
e) Equipment Model Number

8.10.5 Danger and warning indicators shall be written in both Arabic and
English, utilizing white characters on a red background. If specifically
noted Arabic warning indicators may be supplied by others.

8.11 Inspection and Testing

Visual inspection as specified in Form 175-000175 will include checks for


satisfactory workmanship, materials, freedom from surface defects and for
compliance with this Specification, Purchase Order and Quotation Request.

8.11.1 In addition to the Manufacturer's standard tests, each metal enclosed bus
assembly shall be tested in accordance with standard production tests
defined in ANSI/IEEE or IEC standards

8.11.2 Insulating material for covering buses and connections shall be tested in
accordance with section ANSI/IEEE or IEC standards. If requested,
proof of successful testing shall be provided to the BUYER as certified
test results.
