SECTION 204-01: Front Suspension
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Wheel Knuckle

Special Tool(s)

Halfshaft, Installer
204-161 (T97P-1175-A) or equivalent

Removal

NOTICE: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect performance of vital components
and systems and their failure may result in major service expense. New parts must be installed with the
same part numbers or equivalent part, if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of
lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make
sure of correct retention of these parts.

NOTICE: Disconnect the battery ground cable or damage to the steering gear internal power relay may
occur resulting in steering gear replacement.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Section 414-01 .

2. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to Section 204-04A .

3. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

4. General Equipment: Remover, Front Wheel Hub.

5. NOTICE: Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle or damage
to the wheel knuckle can result.

NOTICE: Do not damage the tie-rod end boot while installing the Tie-Rod End Remover.

Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.


6. NOTICE: Do not use a prying device or separator fork between the balljoint and the wheel
knuckle. Damage to the balljoint or balljoint boot may result. Only use the pry bar by inserting
it into the lower arm body opening.

NOTICE: Use care when releasing the lower arm and wheel knuckle into the resting position or
damage to the ball joint seal and/or Constant Velocity (CV) joint boot may occur.

Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

8. Remove the brake disc. Refer to Section 206-03 .

Installation

2. Tighten in 2 stages.
• Stage 1: Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).

• Stage 2: Tighten an additional 180 degrees.

3. Special Tool(s): Installer, Halfshaft 204-161.

4. • Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).

5. Install the brake disc. Refer to Section 206-03 .

6. • Tighten to 4.8 Nm (42 lb-in).


7. • Tighten to 83 Nm (61 lb-ft).

8. • Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

9. NOTICE: Do not tighten the front wheel hub nut with the vehicle on the ground. The nut must
be tightened to specification before the vehicle is lowered onto the wheels. Wheel bearing
damage will occur if the wheel bearing is loaded with the weight of the vehicle applied.

NOTICE: Install and tighten the new wheel hub nut to specification in a continuous rotation.
Always install a new wheel hub nut after loosening or when not tightened to specification in a
continuous rotation or damage to the components may occur.

NOTE: Apply the brake to keep the halfshaft from rotating.

Tighten in 2 stages.

• Stage 1: Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).


• Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
10. Install the wheel and tire. Refer to Section 204-04A .

11. Connect the battery ground cable. Refer to Section 414-01 .

12. Check and, if necessary, align the front end. Refer to Section 204-00 .

Lower Arm

Removal

lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make
sure of correct retention of these parts.

occur resulting in steering gear replacement.

1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Section 414-01 .

2. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to Section 204-04A .

knuckle. Damage to the balljoint or balljoint boot may result. Only use the pry bar by inserting
it into the lower arm body opening.

damage to the ball joint seal and/or Constant Velocity (CV) joint boot may occur.

Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

Installation

1. Finger tight at this stage.

2. • Tighten to 83 Nm (61 lb-ft).

3. Tightening sequence.
1. Loosely install.
2. Tighten in 2 stages
♦ Stage 1: Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
♦ Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
3. Tighten in 2 stages.
♦ Stage 1: Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
♦ Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
4. General Equipment: Jackstand.

5. NOTICE: Tighten the suspension bushing fasteners with the suspension loaded or with the
weight of the vehicle resting on the wheels and tires, otherwise incorrect clamp load and
bushing damage may occur.

Tighten in 2 stages.

• Stage 1: Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).


• Stage 2: Tighten an additional 360 degrees.

6. 1. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).


2. Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

Removal

NOTE: If removing the wheel hub, a new wheel bearing must be installed.

1. Remove the wheel knuckle. Refer to Wheel Knuckle in this section.

2. General Equipment: Hydraulic Press.


Special Tool(s): Handle 205-153. Installer, Wheel Hub Bearing Cup 204-023.

3. NOTICE: The Bearing Puller and Bushing Remover/Installer must be used to prevent damage
to the hub. If the hub is damaged, a new hub must be installed.
NOTICE: Do not use heat to remove the bearing inner ring or damage to the bearing may
occur.

NOTE: This step may not be necessary if the wheel bearing inner race remains on the wheel bearing
after removing the wheel hub.

General Equipment: Hydraulic Press.


Special Tool(s): Remover/Installer, Bushing 204-180.

4. Visual check.

5. Inner securing ring.

6. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.


General Equipment: Hydraulic Press.
Special Tool(s): Handle 205-153. Installer, Drive Pinion Bearing Cup 205-140. Remover, Axle
Bushing 205-538.

Installation

1. NOTICE: Make sure the wheel bearing is installed into the wheel knuckle with the wheel speed
sensor ring (black in color) toward the inner face of the wheel knuckle.

NOTICE: Once the wheel bearing is installed, make sure the wheel speed sensor ring on the
bearing and the sensor hole on the wheel knuckle are clean or damage to the wheel speed sensor
or sensor ring may occur.

General Equipment: Hydraulic Press.


Special Tool(s): Handle 205-153. Installer, Drive Pinion Bearing Cup 205-140.

2. NOTE: Make sure the wheel speed sensor hole in the wheel knuckle is not blocked by the circlip.
The sensor hole must be positioned between the ends of the circlip.

3. General Equipment: Hydraulic Press.
Special Tool(s): Handle 205-153. Installer, Drive Pinion Bearing Cup 205-140. Installer, Axle
Bearing Cup 205-225.

4. Install the wheel knuckle. Refer to Wheel Knuckle in this section.

Wheel Studs

NOTE: Wheel studs are not serviceable separately. Wheel bearing and wheel hub assembly must be replaced.

Installation

NOTICE: Do not use power tools to remove or install the stabilizer bar link nuts. Damage to the
stabilizer bar link ball joints and boots may occur.

NOTICE: Use the internal or external hex-holding feature to prevent the ball and stud from turning
while removing or installing the stabilizer bar link nuts. The link boot seal must not be allowed to twist
while tightening the link nuts or damage to the boot seal will occur.

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

1. NOTICE: Disconnect the battery ground cable or damage to the steering gear internal power
relay may occur resulting in steering gear replacement.

Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Section 414-01 .

2. Steering wheel in straight ahead position.

3. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to Section 204-04A .

5. On both sides.
• To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

6. WARNING: Do not reuse steering column shaft bolts. This may result in fastener failure and
steering column shaft detachment or loss of steering control. Failure to follow this instruction
may result in serious injury to vehicle occupant(s).

Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

• To install, tighten to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).


7. NOTE: The stabilizer bar links are designed with low friction ball joints that have a low breakaway
torque.

NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the ball stud from turning while removing or installing
the stabilizer bar link nut.

On both sides. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

• To install, tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).

8. NOTICE: Do not use a hammer to separate the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle or damage
to the wheel knuckle can result.

NOTICE: Do not damage the tie-rod end boot while installing the Tie-Rod End Remover.

On both sides. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

9. NOTICE: Do not excessively bend or twist the exhaust flexible pipe. Failure to follow these
instructions may cause damage to the exhaust flexible pipe.

10. • To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).

11. • To install, tighten to 86 Nm (63 lb-ft).

14. Lower the subframe in the sequence shown.
1. On both sides.
♦ To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
2. On both sides.
♦ To install, tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).
3. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.
To install, tighten in 2 stages.
♦ Stage 1: Tighten to 140 Nm (103 lb-ft).
♦ Stage 2: Tighten an additional 180 degrees.
4. On both sides.
♦ To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
5. Lower the subframe 35 mm (1.378 in).

15. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.


To install, tighten in 2 stages.
• Stage 1: Tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).
• Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.

Installation

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

2. NOTE: While tightening the subframe bolts, make sure the front subframe does not move.

Special Tool(s): Alignment Pins, Subframe 502-002.

3. Check and, if necessary, adjust the front toe. Refer to Section 204-00 .

Stabilizer Bar Bushing

1. Remove the stabilizer bar. Refer to Stabilizer Bar .

2. NOTICE: Note the position of the component before removal.

Installation

1. NOTE: If replacing the stabilizer bar or the stabilizer bar bushings, note the position of the stabilizer
bar bushing brackets. The bushing locator on the clamp offset must face inboard.

NOTE: Make sure that the component is clean, free of foreign material and lubricant.

Visual check.

1. Metal strip.
2. NOTE: Make sure that the component is installed to the position noted before removal.

General Equipment: Vise.


The bushing locator bump on both bushings must face the RH side of the vehicle.
2. Install the stabilizer bar. Refer to Stabilizer Bar .

Stabilizer Bar Link

Removal

same part numbers or equivalent part, if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of
lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make
sure of correct retention of these parts.

NOTICE: Do not use power tools to remove or install the stabilizer bar link nuts. Damage to the
stabilizer bar link ball joints and boots may occur.

NOTICE: Do not hold the stabilizer bar link boot with any tool or damage to the boot may occur.

NOTE: The stabilizer bar links are designed with low friction ball joints that have a low breakaway torque.

NOTE: When installing the stabilizer link to the stabilizer bar, make sure the stabilizer bar is perpendicular to
the stabilizer link when tightening the link nut or the link nut may not seat properly.

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

1. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to Section 204-04A .

2. NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the ball stud from turning while removing or installing
the stabilizer bar link nut.

Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

• To install, tighten upper nut to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).


• To install, tighten lower nut to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).

Installation

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal

1. NOTICE: Disconnect the battery ground cable or damage to the steering gear internal power
relay may occur resulting in steering gear replacement.

Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Section 414-01 .

2. Steering wheel in straight ahead position.

3. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to Section 204-04A .

4. NOTICE: Do not use power tools to remove or install the stabilizer bar link nuts or damage to
the stabilizer bar link ball joints or boots may occur.

NOTICE: Do not hold the stabilizer bar link boot with any tool or damage to the boot may
occur.

NOTE: Use the hex-holding feature to prevent the ball stud from turning while removing or installing
the stabilizer bar link nut.

NOTE: The stabilizer bar links are designed with low friction ball joints that have a low breakaway
torque.

Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

• To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).


5. • To install, tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).

6. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.


• To install, tighten in 2 stages.
♦ Stage 1: Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).
♦ Stage 2: Tighten an additional 180 degrees.

7. Remove the cowl panel. Refer to Section 501-02 .

8. Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.


• To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

Installation

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.


• For additional information on the disassembly and assembly of the strut and spring assembly,
refer to Strut and Spring Assembly in this section.

2. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary. Refer to Section 204-00 .

DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY

Strut and Spring Assembly

Disassembly

WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this section, refer to Safety Warnings in
Section 100-00 . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTICE: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect performance of vital components
and systems and their failure may result in major service expense. New parts must be installed with the
same part numbers or equivalent part, if replacement is necessary. Do not use a replacement part of
lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make
sure of correct retention of these parts.

1. NOTE: Compress the coil spring enough to relieve the tension on the strut assembly.

General Equipment: Vise, Spring Compressor.

2. NOTE: Note the position of each component before removal.

NOTE: Do not use an impact wrench on the strut rod nut.

Discard the specified component. Follow local disposal regulations.

3. NOTE: During assembly, assemble the bearing plate to the strut so the arrow on the bearing plate
points to the outboard side of the vehicle when the strut is installed.

Remove the bearing plate.

Assembly
1. To assemble, reverse the disassembly procedure.

2. NOTE: Only tighten the strut rod nut finger tight at this stage.

General Equipment: Vise, Spring Compressor.

3. NOTE: Make sure that these components are installed to the noted removal position.

NOTE: Make sure that the spring is correctly located in the lower spring seat.

NOTE: Make sure that the installation marks are aligned.

Visual check.

• Tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
