LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of this chapter, the students should be able to:
 Define what is a graphic design
 Enumerate and understand all the elements of graphic design
 Follow the principles of design in creating an output
 Create an organizer using multiple elements of design

SUBJECT MATTER
Topics: Lesson 7: Introduction to Graphic Design, its Principles and Elements
Reference: Living with Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health 6
Materials: Desktop, Webcam, Headphones, Slide Presentation, Design Software, Paper and Pencil

PROCEDURE
Engage/Explore:
Motivation:(visual spatial, verbal linguistic)
 The teacher will show some posters from our favourite movies and asked them what do
they think about the posters, regarding the layout, choice of color, design
 Some might answer the its colourful, it brings out the hype around the movie, it makes
them feel excited on watching the movie
 The teacher will relate this to their new lesson on Graphic Designing
Day 1
Discussion: (visual spatial, verbal linguistic)
 Define what is Graphic Design
o This is also known as communication design, is the art of planning and
constructing ideas and information with visual and textual content
 Identify the different elements of design
o Lines – these are considered as the simplest or the most basic element of art.
Also known as the moving dot
o Color is the most influential element of design
o Texture refers to the feel of surface
o Shape usually serves as container of information
o Text refers to the font or font styles used in design
o Space is the area occupied and unoccupied by the other elements
o Size suggest emphasis of information.
o Value refers to the lightness and darkness of an area in a design.
Day 2
Engage/ Explore:
Review:
 Recap on the discussion about what is Graphic design
 Review on the different elements of design
Discussion:
 Identify the different Principles of Design
o Balance refers how elements are put together in the design
o Movement refers to the repetition of elements to direct the movement of the eye
through the design
o Contrast refers to the distinctiveness of the elements
o Emphasis refers to the use of colors, size, and contrast to provide special
attention and importance to the subject of the design
o Pattern refers to the organization of alternated or repeated elements or motifs
o Unity refers to all the parts of the design arranged to give the viewer the feeling
that all are linked together.
Day 3
Discussion: (visual spatial, verbal linguistic, bodily-kinesthetic)
 Performance task of students
 They will create a poster of their own design applying the different elements and
principles of design
 Students can either use traditional or a software

Extend/Elaborate:
 This is the freedom for the students to express themselves creatively with the use of art.
Art is an expression of oneself and this lesson will help them to be open to change and
describe their thoughts and feelings through graphic design.
 Art Appreciation, Expressiveness
 How can a graphic design change a perspective about life? Help people to overcome
problems?

Generalization:
 Graphic design is the art or practice of transferring ideas into a visual content
 The elements of design can be used following the design principles to create an attractive
graphic design

EVALUATION
Day 2 (visual spatial, verbal linguistic, and artistic)
 Think about your favourite scenes or view, then create a graphic design about it applying
the different elements of design
 You can use traditional tools such as paper, pencil, and coloring materials; others can do
this by digital arts
 Submit on Google Classroom – Nov. 3
Day 3 (visual spatial, verbal linguistic, and artistic)
 Think about your favourite scenes or view, then create a graphic design about it applying
the different principles of design
 You can use traditional tools such as paper, pencil, and coloring materials; others can do
this by digital arts – Nov. 5
