RABBIT RAISING PROJECT
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The African Swine Fever(ASF) outbreak way back 2019 hardly hit the Philippine swine industry affecting swine growers and farmers to
terminate all of the swine on their farms in order for the virus to stop manifesting. According to the director of Bureau of Animal Industry
Reildrin Morales, since mid-2019 the ASF virus affected approximately 2,981 Barangays in the 579 Cities and Municipalities mostly in Luzon
resulting to massive shortage of pork in the country and caused to high price of the pork meat in markets.

In line with this the demand for chicken, beef, vegetables and other pork alternatives increased. Rabbit meat production on the other
hand has been already on the thoughts of being a potential replacement for pork and took again an impression when the African Swine fever
outbreak happened considering that the growth cycle of Rabbit is very short and only takes around 2-3 months in order to reach its marketable
size compared to swine’s which takes over double of the period. Rabbit meat has an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It is high in

vitamins B3 and B12, phosphorus, potassium and selenium. It contributes to a good balance of vitamins and minerals for daily dietary requirements. Rabbit meat is
flavour- ful and easily digested, this meat contains 20–21% of proteins, unsaturated fatty acids (oleic and linoleic; 60% of all fatty acids), potassium, phosphorus, and

magnesium, it has low concentrations of fat. The meat is also easy to digest and relatively disease free. Due to its low fat content, rabbit meat can make it easier to

reduce your calorie intake without giving up flavor. Rabbits are an important part of the planet’s ecosystem. This is because they help to keep invasive plants (weeds)
under control. In turn, this encourages other plants, insects, and birds to thrive. Also, pet rabbits are good for humans because they enhance our physical and mental

health. Rabbits can be raised solely on grass and veggies if they need to be, and can line breed for many generations without issue. They are truly a sustainable,

cheap way raising meat. And also the reason why our project should take place in the community is that Rabbit is Efficient, is easy to take care, they are healthy, they
are reproductive miracles, they take up very little space, don’t cost much to set up, rabbit can make manure, butchering doesn’t need any fancy and last you can sell

them either as meat and as a pet.
