Activity 1: Compare and Contrast the Planets

1.

Earth

-found in between Venus and Mars

-optimum surface pressure
-H2O and O2 are present in its
atmosphere
-presence of magnetic field

somewhat similar in -somewhat similar in

size (diameter), rational speed, length
mass, density, of day
gravity, and escape-terrestrial planets -presence of Ar
velocity -spheroidal shape
Venus -with GHG Mars
-CO2, N are the common
-nearest planet from the gases in the atmosphere
-half of Earth’s size
sun (diameter)
- rotational speed is -no Global magnetic - lightest of the 3 planets
extremely slow fields -lowest density among
-high surface pressure -has high amounts
the 3 planets
-long period in a day of CO2 in the
-farthest from the sun
(2,802 hours) atmosphere
-very low surface
pressure

2. If greenhouse gases are not present in the atmosphere, a planet’s temperature will be
lower. In this case, the earth’s surface temperature would be around -18oC or lower.
3. A planet's temperature is a function of its distance from the Sun. The nearer the planet
from the Sun, the higher is its temperature and chemicals would easily evaporate; the
farther the planet from the Sun, the lower is its temperature and chemicals would
freeze.

4. Shelter (place to live) – life cannot exist without a place to live. If Earth is not
habitable for life, then it is useless to put life on earth. We have to make our planet
first habitable before the existence of life
Support System (love) – support system should be prerequisite for life since we can
do nothing after birth. We are being cared by the people around us like our parents
and family. We definitely die in a day if we are born and no one ever taking care of
us. We grow because of the love and support of our family to the point that we can
already live on our own. Some people might still find it difficult to live even if they
are now older. Basic needs also are important in living.

Activity 2: Crash Landing

1. Planet 4 is the best choice. It is fairly cold, but has oxygen present in the atmosphere,
indicating that it may have life already in residence. It has ozone, and therefore offers
protection from UV radiation. Good for extremophiles also due to presence of
tectonic activity which allows for the possibility that hydrothermal vents exist on the
planets.

2. Planet 3 is on the warm side, but has oceans of liquid water, which give it an Earth-
like appearance, good for extremophiles only. Planet 2 is too small to maintain much
of an atmosphere, but has a habitable temperature and polar ice caps that indicate
there might be a source of water. Moons of planets 5 and 7 are for extremophiles also.
Other planets have no or limited factors present to support life.

3. Yes. Planet 4 has active volcanoes and seismic activities, presence of N, O 2 and ozone
layer, cold temperature and presence of water.
Activity 3: My Home, Your Home, Our Home for Life

Earth
It’s a spinning sphere of rock,
That’s flying through the air.
Third planet from the big bright sun,
A place we all do share.

Only planet with known life,

From birds, to bears and bees.
With many types of living things,
From forests to blue seas.

We all share this awesome place,

Its beauty we all roam.
Let’s protect our Mother Earth,
The place we all call home.

Reflection/Commitment

My Pledge in Nurturing and Protecting Mother Earth

Earth is my home. I promise to keep it clean and healthy. I will love the land, the air,
the water and all the living creatures. I will help save Earth. Together, we can take action to
create lasting solutions and protect the future of nature.

2. Changes on the physical and chemical makeup of the components happen. Events
may occur.

3. Life on Earth is not possible.

4. A system is a set of interconnected components that are interacting to form a unified

whole.

Guide Questions:
1. An event can cause changes to occur in one or more of the spheres, and/or an event
can be the effect of changes in one or more of Earth’s four spheres. This two-way
case and effect relationship between an event and a sphere is called an interaction.
Interactions also occur on the spheres that’s why there is an event.

2. Bird reseeding may not be effective in scorched top-soil. Water erosion leads to
cloudy-muddy streams. Predators and prey may be forced to same water area.
Blackened areas may cause small updrafts. Burned deep woods offer less shelter to
animals. Ash in air can lead to rainfall.

3. The occurrence may be the result of changes in one or more of the four spheres of the
planet. This to-way cause and effect interaction between an event and a sphere is
called interaction. For instance –, “does the changes in the geosphere affect the
biosphere?” Yes, changes within a sphere could kill several of the spheres.

Activity 3: Enrichment
How man has altered the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and as a
consequence, the Earth as whole, has greatly increased over time. Since the beginning, our
Great Creator has already given the responsibility in taking care of the planet to the most
highly intellectual beings. He made man to look after the animals He created. Unfortunately,
man has forgotten that calling. Thousands of years went by and man has greatly multiplied,
as well as, their unthoughtful and undisciplined acts towards the earth which caused drastic
changes with it and its subsystems – atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere.
In the Earth’s atmosphere, different pollutants released by machines, engines, and
other human inventions have badly affected the air. Some countries are full of smog which is
dangerous for one’s health. In biosphere, man has controlled the life cycle of other animals
for food consumption. In hydrosphere, many water forms were poisoned by factory
excretions, killing the living organisms in it. Lastly, in lithosphere, man has scraped some soil
and removed trees for construction which sometimes result to landslide and erosion. These
are some of the unpleasant changes man has contributed to the world. Life on earth would
still exist many more years if it is properly taken good care and having so much respect to the
things it contains.

Reflection
I realized that I have remarkably fortunate to have lived in a period of our planet’s
climate that has been very benign and have observed the remarkable beneficial aspects it has
had on humanity. As for the future, beyond my life, I fear that it could be very different as we
approach the end of the current warm period and maybe descend back into another glacial
situation.
