Classification of Rocks

Activity 1: Rock Cycle in Action

1. Igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks.

2. Table 1. Describe the types of rock through the crayon rock activity
Rock Type Formation Process
Igneous Cooling/ solidification/ crystallization of magma
Sedimentary Lithification/compaction/cementation of sediments
Parent rock (sedimentary/igneous) transform into
Metamorphic

Activity 2: Meeting the Rock
1. Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

2. They can be formed in three ways- cementation of sediments compacted over a long
period of time (clastic), precipitation of minerals from ions in solution
(crystalline/chemical), and compaction and cementation of plants and/or animal
remains (bio clast).

3. They can be formed in three ways- slowly cooling of magma (intrusive), rapidly
cooling of magma (extrusive) and consolidation of particle erupted by explosive
volcanic activity (pyroclastic).

4. Metamorphic rocks can be formed by two factors: pressure due to tectonic activity or
regional metamorphism which results to foliated metamorphic rocks and heat due to
direct contact between an older rock material and an intruding bod of magma or
contact metamorphism which results to non-foliated metamorphic rocks. They can
also be formed from faulting (dynamic metamorphism) and/or meteorite impact
(shock metamorphism).

2. The rocks samples I have gathered are mostly granite and conglomerate, they are good
and safe for building residential houses since they are widely used in the construction
industry.

3. Classifying rocks is essential in civil engineering because they are the primary
material in construction, the rocks’ identity and characteristics should be identified
properly to determine whether they are good or not for construction. Unsuitable rocks
used may pose danger.

Reflection
1. I learned that rocks and minerals are not necessarily the same thing because, minerals
are the building blocks of rocks. Minerals make up rocks. And all rocks are classified
into three groups.

2. I enjoyed most on classifying and gathering rocks, because of that, I was able to
identify which rock group would that particular rock belongs.

3. I want to learn more on the formation of rocks. I am curious about how rock types
form and how long does it take to breakdown rocks.

Uses of Minerals

Guide questions for the inferences:

1. Copper, Iron and Clay. Many of the things we use have these three mineral
components.

2. Technology. There is a high demand for applying concepts to real scenarios.

3. Minerals for Energy. Although it is needed, there are only a few minerals that can be
sources of energy.

Uses of Minerals

Guide questions for the inferences:

1. Copper, Iron and Lithium. These minerals are the ones that compose the imported
products.

2. Technology and energy. These minerals are the ones that are present in the things
which the country possibly demands or needs.

3. Facemask – incorporate copper because it has an antiviral property

Disinfectant – fluorite can be highly utilized
Reflection
1. I learned that rocks and minerals are all around us. They help us to develop new
technologies and are used in our everyday lives. Our use of rocks and minerals
includes as building material, cosmetics, cars, roads, and appliances. In order to
maintain a healthy lifestyle and strengthen the body, humans need to consume
minerals daily. Rocks and minerals play a valuable role in natural systems such as
providing habitat like the cliffs, or provide soil nutrients.

2. I enjoyed most on identifying, classifying minerals, and knowing their proper uses
and where they came from or what are their origins.

3. I want to learn more on the common and uncommon minerals and their uses because
sometimes we didn’t know where the chemicals or things we use came from.
