Phil 2:7 “but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of man.

The Greek word here for “nothing” is kenόō. It means to empty oneself, to divest oneself of rightful
dignity by descending to an inferior condition, to abase oneself.

His taking on the form of a servant indicates that humanity did NOT displace deity in his personality. He
took on himself voluntarily, in addition to his pre-incarnate condition which veiled His deity.

So, at this point I believe we agree. Jesus was always God, and while on the earth, He was also all
human. So at least one of the things Jesus emptied himself of was looking like deity. He looked like a
bondservant. The question is, did He ever do anything because he was deity? I say “no” and here are
the verses.

John 10:37-38 Jesus did the works of His Father.

37 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, even though
you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me
and I am in the Father."

John 14:10 He did not speak on His own authority, but His Father did His works.
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do
not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

John 5:19 The Son can do nothing of his own accord.

19 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only
what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.

Matt 26:39 Not the will of the Son, but of the Father
39And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it be possible, letthis cup
pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will."

John 5:30 The Son could do nothing on His own. He did not seek His own will, but that of His Father.
30"I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own
will but the will of him who sent me.

John 6:38 Jesus came to earth to do His Father’s will, not His own will.
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.

John 8:28 Did nothing on His own authority.

28 So Jesus said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and
that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.

John 12:49 Not His own authority, but His Father gave Him what to say and what to speak.
49 For I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a
commandment--what to say and what to speak.
Psalm 40:7-8 Even this truth is taught in the Old Testament.
7 Then I said, "Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me: 8 I delight to do your
will, O my God; your law is within my heart."

Hebrews 10:5-10 Explains what is said in Psalm 40:7-8.

5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not
desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no
pleasure. 7 Then I said, 'Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of
the book.'" 8 When he said above, "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and
offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he
added, "Behold, I have come to do your will." He does away with the first in order to establish the
second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus
Christ once for all.

Note: When Mary, pregnant with Jesus, walked into the room where Elizabeth was, pregnant with John
the Baptist, the baby John jumped in his mother’s womb. And then later, when John first saw Jesus, God
reveled to John that Jesus was His Son.

This note is to just show one example of a human knowing something only because God revealed it to
him. Actually, the same thing happened when Simon, the old man waiting to see God’s salvation, knew
that the baby Jesus was God’s salvation.

In other words, because Jesus did nothing on his own, but only what the Father revealed to him, he
never did anything because of his power of being God. Just as we, humans only, can do even more than
Jesus did if we will only obey our Heavenly Father.

John 14:12 We can (mere humans) if we believe in Jesus, do even greater works than what Jesus did.
12"Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works
than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.
