The document outlines a project-based learning unit plan for making lye soap via saponification. The unit aims to develop students' critical thinking, creativity, problem solving and innovation skills. Students will learn the procedure for making soap, how saponification occurs, and the properties and uses of soap. Potential issues are identified such as lack of safety equipment or chemicals, with proposed solutions like scheduling flexibility. Students will understand soap production and chemical reactions through hands-on experimentation, with assessments including performance tasks, written tests, and observations.

PBL Instructional Unit Plan
PBL Unit Preparation
Define the Content The objective of this laboratory is to make PBL Ideas lye soap via the saponification reaction. This learning material will develop the 21st Century skills of the learners: critical thinking, creativity, discipline, problem solving and innovation. The learners are expected to determine and learn the procedure of making soaps, how saponification occurs, properties of soap, the final product of the reaction and the uses and principles of saponification. Moreover, values must also be incorporated into the learning process in order to instill appropriate attitudes.
Identify the Context The learning material includes the following
activities that learners can use to apply the intended content:
Wearing safety goggles, laboratory gown,
gloves and observe laboratory rules. Preparing the materials and equipments needed. Calibrating accurate amounts of solutions and chemicals. Choosing of fragrance Performing the experiment Molding of Soaps Describing the appearance and properties Identifying the reaction for the saponification List Possible Problems Learners doesn’t have Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Inaccurate measurement of solution and chemicals. Equipments are not available Chemicals are not available Misbehaving Fragrance or Essential Oil Learners are not following the procedure Breaking of glass wares and spilling of chemicals
Describe Potential If learners do not have PPE, they can rent
Solutions in the campus worth 10 pesos. Learners should read the instructions first before starting. Learners should be mindful and cautious in getting the right amount of chemicals and solutions and refer the measurements in the manual. If the equipments and the working laboratory are not available to the scheduled time then the teacher should reschedule it for the learners to perform the experiment. The teacher should make sure first that the chemicals and solutions needed for the experiment are available before performing the experiment. If the solution has a misbehaving fragrance , the learners should add only the specific amount of fragrance or essential oil and blend it lightly. Learners should understand and analyze the procedure to avoid mistakes and they should be cautious to their movements since they might break laboratory glasswares and spill chemicals that might cause damages and fire.
Calibrate Your Project It is recommended that students bring their
laboratory gown, goggles, and gloves. The necessary equipment, chemicals, and solutions are provided. A good methodology would include things like group discussions, lectures, self- paced learning, and video presentations. Manuals would also be provided to students as references, and it is recommended that they conduct their own research in order to be prepared for the discussion. Describe the Task The experiment and tasks given will help the learners to understand how soaps are made and relating it to science, they will determine how the reactions of saponification occur. They are provided considerable insight and quantitative information about the tasks. On the experiment, problems will inevitably arise, but being prepared and developing problem- solving skills will aid the learners in dealing with them. Students' understanding of specific scientific facts and concepts, as well as how these facts and concepts are organized in scientific disciplines, may be enhanced by this laboratory experiences.
Reflect on the Learning Learners are assessed through performance
tasks, written assessments and direct observations to ensure that they are learning effectively. Written assessments were used to determine the students' knowledge and understanding on the saponification while performance tasks includes the experiment itself and making the final product which is soap.
