Let’s Check
Activity 1: Read the following questions and write your answers on a white bond paper.

1. What is the importance of foundation in a certain structure?

⇁ The importance of a foundation of a certain structure is to hold and ensure that
the structure remains upright. This is the base of the buildings where it supports
the load and also keeping the building to stand firm. If the foundation were
poorly constructed it will put at risk the life of the people staying in that
building. Foundation is one of the most important in the building as where the
whole structure above depending.

2. Explain, in your own understanding, what is ultimate bearing capacity.

⇁ As for my own understanding, ultimate bearing capacity is the theoretical value
for the pressure under which the soil remains just before the failure.

3. Look for a latest article/journal relating to foundation engineering that

encountered any failures/issues on foundation. Explain briefly the issue about the
chosen article/journal.

(Research Article: Grouting Reinforcement of Large Building Foundation over Old Gob
Areas: A Case Study in Huaibei Mining Area, China
Published: December 03, 2018)

⇁ Base on the article that I’ve read, according to their observation the chosen
bedrock for the building had been broken and serious fractures developed under
above the gob areas, resulting the stability of the gob areas weaken. The
foundation of the office building was unstable because the depth affected by the
load from the office building was 85 m, and the largest height of the fracture
zone from mining was 21.4. And the fracture zone overlapped with the areas
affected from the load because the shallowest burial depth of the No. 5 coal seam
was 96 m. And also the compressive strength of the bedrock was weak, so the
bedrock will have a large deformations and sedimentation when under high
load.
