Eco-Friendly Routing On Google Maps

Eco-Friendly Routing On Google Maps
Google believes that technology has a unique opportunity to help different types of
industries decarbonize, particularly those with the largest carbon footprints. Take
transportation for example: according to the International Energy Agency road
vehicles account for over 75% of the transportation emissions.
Exploring ways through which google products and technology can provide
solutions that reduce the carbon impacts of cars and trucks, google came up with a
new feature that helps drivers to go from A to B more sustainably.
Through this feature an entirely new routing model has been built to optimize a
lower fuel consumption, taking into consideration key factors like road incline and
congestion, all while using google maps for traffic predictions.
Now when you get directions google maps will default to the most fuel efficient
route with the lowest carbon emissions when it has roughly the same ETA as the
fastest route. In cases where the more fuel efficient route could significantly
increase your ETA, you have a choice: you can take the fastest route, or the one
that is more eco-friendly. It is estimated that this change has the potential to save
over 1 million tons of carbon emissions per year, that’s to say the equivalent of
removing over 200.000 cars from the road.
