Problem # 1
A constant air volume system having a filter located in location A of the figure and a
filter efficiency of 70% for environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is to be used to assist in
holding the particulate level of the ETS in an occupied zone below 220 µg/m3. Assume
that an average occupant (including smokers and nonsmokers) produces about 125
µg/min of ETS, and that 20 cfm of outdoor air per person is to be supplied. For a
ventilation effectiveness of 0.65 for the space, determine the necessary rate of
recirculation assuming no ETS in the incoming outdoor air.
Problem # 2
A filter system to handle 5600 cfm of air is to be designed using M-2A media and the
12x24x8 modules. The lost pressure must be 0.10 in wg. or less when the filters are clean.
How many modules are required?
Problem # 3
A system requires a flow rate of 210 gpm and a head of 120 ft.
1. Select a pump from the figure that most closely matches the required flow rate
and head, and list its shaft power and efficiency.
2. Suppose a 7 in., 3500 rpm pump was selected for the system. At what flow rate
and head would the system operate, assuming no adjustments? Find the efficiency
and power.
3. If the system of part (b) is adjusted to a flow rate of 210 gpm. What are the
efficiency and power?
Problem # 4
Size the piping for the cooling tower open circuit shown in Figure. Water flow rate is
0.03 m3/s, and the total equivalent length of the pipe is 200 m. The pressure loss for the
condenser coil is 35 kPa, and the strainer has a Cvs of 1.14x10-2 m3.s per kPa pressure
loss.
What is the head requirement for the pump.

A smoking area in a factory is designed for 75 people. Design a filter and air-circulation
system whereby the outdoor air rate can be reduced to 15 cfm/person. Outdoor and
recirculated air should be mixed before filtering. Outdoor air contaminants are negligible.
The filter media must have a gravimetric efficiency of about 80 % in the 0-5x10-3 mm
particle range, and the pressure loss must not exceed 0.10 in. water Refer to Table 4-6.

Problem # 1
An auditorium has a calculated cooling load of 410 kW with SHF = 0.756. The space is
maintained at 25 oC db and φ = 50 %. Outdoor air isat 38 oC and φ = 50 %. Ten percent
(by mass) of the air supplied to the space is outdoor air. Air to be supplied to the space at
not less than 18 oC. Assume sea level pressure.
Problem # 2
a. A smoking area in a factory is designed for 75 persons. Design a filter system
whereby the outdoor air rate can be reduced to 15 cfm/person. Outdoor air and re-
circulated air should be mixed before filtering. Outdoor air contaminants are
negligible. The filter media must have a gravimetric efficiency of 80 %in the 0-
5*10-3 mm particle range and the pressure loss should not exceed 0.10 in. water.
First find the recommended outdoor air requirement per person.
b. The condensers for a centrifugal chiller plant require 200 gpm with water entering
at 85F and leaving at 100 F; the outdoor ambient air wet bulb temperature is 76F.
1. Select a suitable cooling tower
2. Compute the cooling range, approach and the tower capacity.

lengths given are total equivalent lengths excluding the coil and control valves. Select a
pump for this system. Note that the longest run is 123451.
Problem # 4
Compute the loss n total pressure for each run of the duct system shown in figure. The
ducts are of round cross section. Turns and fittings are shown.
Assume abrupt entrance, pleated elbows and 45o branch. Use equivalent length method.
