Porto is a costal city located in the northwest of Portugal, on the banks of the Douro
River near the Atlantic Ocean. Porto is the second largest city of Portugal, after

Porto city is small compared to its metropolitan area, with a population of 237,559
people in an area of 41. 42 km2 . Porto's metropolitan area has an estimated 1.7
million people (2019) in an area of 2,395 km2 .
Porto is “The City of bridges” with 6 bridges over the Douro River that connect the
cities of Porto and Gaia: Dom Luis I Bridge, Maria Pia Bridge, Arrabida Bridge,
Infante D. Henrique Bridge, São João Bridge and Freixo Bridge. There is a river
cruise to see the bridges. The oldest bridge in Porto is Maria Pia Bridge. This is a
railway bridge which was lifted in 1877 by Gustave Eiffel and was named after the
queen of Portugal of the time. Today, it represents a monument, not only of Porto, but
of the entire country. The Infante Bridge is the newest bridge, it is amazing with its
280 meters arch span, and 371 meters length.
The most important monuments in Porto are: The Catedral, the Town Hall, Palacio da
Bolsa, Iglesia de los Clérigos, Torre de los Cléricgos, Palacio Episcopal, the old
Ponte Pênsil, Livraria Lello, Estadio do Dragao, and São Bento Railway Station.
LISBON
Both cities have got good views, a Cathedral, and are near the mouth of a river on the
Atlantic coast.
In Lisbon there is the Vasco da Gama Bridge, 17 km long, it is longer than the bridges
in Porto. The Vasco da Gama Bridge is the longest bridge in the European Union and
one of the longest bridges in the world.
