I. Background of the Author

Curtiss Ann Matlock is the author of thirty-six books and short stories. With over 7 million copies
in print worldwide, her books have earned rave reviews, spots on the USA TODAY bestseller lists
and numerous awards.

Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, into a family of avid readers, Curtiss Ann began her writing
career with publication of two small, warm-hearted articles about her life, for which she received a
total of $100. She was so enthused at this success that she immediately started writing her first novel.
She also enrolled in the professional writing program at the University of Oklahoma, where she
studied under the bestselling writer Jack Bickham and Grand Master mystery writer, Carolyn Hart. In
her second year of study, Curtiss Ann experienced the dream of selling the first novel she ever wrote,
a romance, to Harlequin Books. She continued on to sell every book she wrote.
Told with a strong Southern voice, her insightful stories portray the uncommon valor of
everyday people and the humor, heartbreak, and shining graces of small-town life. In 1999, Lost
Highways was nominated for a RITA Award in women’s fiction from the Romance Writers of
America, and began the tender and funny series about the lives of the beloved characters in fictional
Valentine, Oklahoma. The sixth book of the series, Sweet Dreams at the Goodnight Motel, was a
Oklahoma Book Award finalist.

For the past five years, Curtiss Ann has occupied herself with family life in south Alabama,
essays on the writer life on her blog, and developing the republishing of her early novels.

After a long argument, her mom and dad finally got home, and they're starting to packed up all
the things they've been used. On that night also, before the argument, she told to her daughters
that she bought a new house far away from their rented house, actually it's an hour distance in
their house. The two girls were exited and Sara was not happy about that, because she's leaving
the house and her friend also. Her mom and dad didn't want to Ellie moved on a house, far from
her rented house, maybe the two of them are overprotected to her and the girls. Early morning
they decided to move to the new house. They packed all their things appliances, etc. Coming over
to the house was quite difficult, since they were starting off, and Ellie has a less money to have. A
few weeks later the house eventually getting nicer, the walls are newly painted, but there’s no air

Ellie has a bright idea, she went off outside to find a new job. She'd been to many places
but one company hired her. It was in the Last Chance Café. Going there was not easy because
Wade was there, every time he sees wade, her heart keep on beating, as fast as cheetah, as loud as

discussion of things, Gayla offered Ellie as a waitress there, since she doesn't have any work at

Few weeks later, Last chance café will conduct a spring blowout, and everyone is invited,
employees, customers and some of wade's friends, and of course Ellie is invited, since wade start
to court her. Ellie's parents know about them, at first they're against with them, but love was
powerful, so her parents agreed to court Ellie first. Weeks flies so fast, before the spring blowout,
Ellie and Gayla talked about who will going to be their date on that night. Gayla said she was
going with her admirer Dal Allen, they have a lot of conversation, suddenly Gayla asked who will
be her date on that night, Ellie's says it would probably the girls, but Gayla suggested Wade, since
wade is a single man and Wade doesn't have any date at all. The day there all waiting for, it’s The
Spring Blowout. Everyone was there, even Ellie's daughters. Ellie was sitting and Andrew
hurriedly went to Ellie's place and asked her to dance, but Ellie refuses, because she doesn't dance
at all, eventually Wade saw it and in hurry, he went also to Ellie's place and asked her again, but
instead of accepting the request of two of them, she eventually refuses and stood up and asked the
two to eat up over the foods on the table. After a restless night of party, all of them gradually
going low and tiredness seen on their faces, Ellie and girls went home and sleep all night.

After a few months, Ellie and Wade's closeness are getting heavy and heavier, then each
one of them went on their house, Rae and Poppy still going on Wade's house. After a few weeks,

night and Wade is heading home, as he drove the car she notices a girl walking on a lightless
street, he opened his headlight and he guessed that was Sara. As he drove the car towards the girl,
his guessed was true it was Sara. She rapidly asked her to get on the car and talked about what
happened. After a short discussion, Wade dropped her to Maryann's.

It's a night full of happiness, Wade visited Ellie on their house, together with the girl their
shared happiness and a night full of stories. Wade asked the girl if it's okay to talk with Ellie at
the barn, the girls approved it. Ellie and Wade shared stories. After a long conversation, Wade
and Ellie stood up, Wade pull Ellie and romance were around on the barn. He touches Ellie's
cheek and ask her to marry but Ellie refuses to his proposal, because Ellie cared about Sara's
feelings. And the romance around them rapidly change into nonsense argument. Wade walked out
bringing his pride and Ellie as well.

E. Denouement

Ellie and Wade maybe got split up because of that argument. Times flies, Ellie didn’t saw
any presence of Wade, in his house and even in the café. Maybe Ellie missing Wade’s hanging
out with her, the way Wade talk to her. After that, it’s already afternoon and Sara thinking up if
she will says to her mom what she did about Maryann’s slumber party. After a long thinking
process, Sara decided to tell her mom all of it, Sara’s mindset was all set-up, and she’s starting to
like Wade, because Wade protect her the way her father did. Sara urgently came to her mother
and tell everything what she did, and Ellie met her expectations, she was in a state of shock. After
that conversation, Ellie rapidly changed her dress and she want to go at Wade’s house to tell
everything, to say sorry what she did. In hurry, Ellie tell to her daughters that if she needing her

A month later, tomorrow is Ellie and Wade’s wedding, everyone’s getting ready, even

still Sara keep on checking the plans on her mom’s wedding, for her it is also the nice day to all

refuses to sleep beside Ellie, instead he want to sleep on his house. Wade wants a nice and well

It’s the day, Ellie and Wade’s wedding, all of the visitors are getting ready at church.
Finally the long wait is over. All watches the two changing their promises, their vows. It so
seeing them at church giving their wills and promises. After the wedding, the reception of it is in
Wade’s business, which of course the Last Chance Café, where it all began. After a long day, the
two of them planned on having their honey moon at Dallas. Wade’s accept all of Ellie’s flaws
even her daughters, and Wade wants also a child with Ellie, of course he want it to be a boy.

VI. Theme

The theme of the entire story entitled Last Chance Café authored by Curtiss Ann Matlock
was all about independency of a mother, romance and to love again.

First is independency of a mother, I put it there, because the main character was a
widowed woman who has a three daughter, she raised them all by herself and gave them a nice
living. Second is romance, I also put it, because the character, herself has an admirer, two
admirer, but the first one she picked and loved the most. Lastly is to love again, always gave
another chance to love again, because if loving again makes you happy and make your heart
fluttered the go for it. These are the themes of the story that I was read.

VII. Motifs
CENTRAL COLLEGES OF THE PHILIPPINES
HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION
16

In this book, I read, I didn’t saw any motif of it. I don’t know why the author didn’t put
any motifs, but putting some motif will ensure the story more remarkable and noticeable where
the story fall off.

VIII. Symbols

Here are some of symbolism written on the book:

1. Womanly fragrance (Chapter Eight)

- In the story womanly fragrance doesn’t define there as a fragrance that
woman has. Thus, it explains the motherhood of a woman and scent of her
being a nice lady.

2. Ray of sunshine (Chapter Eight)

- It’s not define as a ray of sunshine toward us or on the ground. Perhaps, it
defines as the everyday happiness and joy that Poppy has, her smile makes
them happy also, and it also defines her personality as a jolly person.

3. Wall between them (Chapter Eight)

- It’s not a literal wall between them. It was an imaginary wall dividing Ellie
and Wade. An invisible wall.
4. Dose of her own often-given medicine (Chapter Fifteen)
- It’s not literally her daily dose of medicine. Instead, it symbolizes as the
lessons that Ellie receive from her child Sara, when Sara gave her a lesson on
life.
5. Exploding star (Chapter Sixteen)
- It is not a real star who will explode immediately. Thus, it symbolizes the joy
that Wade has, the joy that will going to burst immediately, when he saw
Ellie.

IX. Remarkable Lines

1. “And I don’t believe I’m behaving irresponsibly. I’m being quite opposite, I’m
being responsible for myself and the girls for the first time in five years.” – Eleanor
“Ellie” McGrew (Chapter Three)

2. “And I’ve changed. I see no reason why I have to let the dream go. I know it won’t
be as wonderful, won’t be as easy, as it would have been wit Galen, but it can be
good.” – Eleanor “Ellie” McGrew (Chapter Three)

3. “Ellie give credit for knowing something. I may not be the same as your precious
Galen, but I think I’m man enough to be a husband to you and a father to those
girls.” – Wade Wolcott (Chapter Fifteen)

4. “If I knew he loved her the way I do you. I’m not playing around, Ellie. I’m willing
to pledge all that stuff about for a better or worse for the rest of our lives, ‘cause I
think living the rest of my life with you will be pretty damn good. And you’re only
the second woman in my life that I’ve said as much to.” – Wade Wolcott (Chapter
Fifteen)

5. “And you’re acting in a way we never brought you to be---irresponsible, headstrong

and a bit fast and loose, missy. I don’t know what’s going on with you.” – Ellie’s
Mom (Chapter Three

X. Conclusions

After reading the entire novel, I can proudly say that this is beautiful, because it has a
great story, and a great connection in real life. You can see the hardships of a single-mom raising

her daughters, because for me being a single mom is a tough job. This novel also has a big impact
to me, I’m not a bookworm but reading this novel makes my belief changed, I love the way the
author wrote this kind of novel. It also changed my perceptions on single mom, they strengthen
my beliefs that being a single-mom is not an easy job. I also liked what the attitudes that the
character has, she was a strong, independent woman and she can do all things for her children, I
like also her positivity in life her independency and loving to her daughters and her new husband.

In addition, I also admired what the author put in her novel, the clarity, relativity and
creativity that it has. I am proudly recommending it to all the people, especially the single-mom
out there. Try to read the story, it so beautiful, blood, sweat and tears were putted in the book.
And, you can picked a lot of lessons here and you might relate to it since I’m recommending it to
single-moms. I’m sure you really appreciate this story, because I appreciated it well the essence
of it.

I have a few comments about the book. First is the vocabulary words, I have noticed that
there are words that is much difficult to understand, because it was so deep, try to lessen the
deeper word as much as possible. Last is, try to put some cover picture to every chapter, it will
nicely presentable if there’s a visual aids to know what will happened to the chapter it
corresponds, I think it will make your book entertaining. That’s only my comments.
