The Cooling Load (Walls, Roof, Windows, Doors) - CLTD Method

𝑞ሶ 𝑤 𝑡 = 𝑈𝐴 𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑟

𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑟 = 𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 + 78 − 𝑇𝑖 + 𝑡𝑜𝑚 − 85

▪ Standard CLTD values are computed with the following set of data
Inside temperature = 78 F
▪ Outdoor maximum temperature = 95 F, daily range = 21 F
▪ For conditions other than the standard, Indoor and outdoor temperature
corrections are applied using the above equation

The Cooling Load (Walls, Roof, Windows, Doors) - CLTD Method

▪ CLTD tables for several standard wall types are published (Tables 8-19)
▪ Calculating the cooling loads for walls consists of three steps:
▪ 𝑞ሶ 𝑤 𝑡 = 𝑈𝐴 𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑟
▪ Step-1: Calculate the U value of the wall
▪ Step-2: Determine the wall type matching
with the ASHRAE wall number
▪ Step-3: Read the standard CLTD value
(Table 8-19). Apply correction if
required and calculate the coolig
load.

Cooling Load from Exterior Walls:

Question: For this example:

• West Wall Construction Details: • Consider to = 94 ̊F and DR = 30 ̊F

• 4 in. heavy concrete
• 2 in. insulation (high density) on
outside OA Temp to
𝐷𝑅
• outside finished with stucco 2

• inside finished with gypsum board

• Calculate the cooling load per ft2 of
the west wall at 1700h, given: to (max temp) and DR are given in Table
• indoor temp. = 79 F C-1 for various locations

• outdoor design temps are given in

Table C-1 for various locations:

Solution:
𝑞ሶ 𝑤 𝑡 = 𝑈𝐴 𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑟

Step 1: Determine the R value of the wall using material properties listed in Table 8-21.

Step 2: Determine the Wall Type
Wall type depends on:
1) mass placement with
respect to insulation
2) overall R-value
3) principal wall
material
4) secondary material
(gypsum etc.)
• Mass placement: inside insulation, i.e.
mass is towards the conditioned space
ℎ𝑟𝑓𝑡 2 ℉
• R-value: 8.37
𝐵𝑡𝑢
• Principal wall materials are:
• i) the massive wall materials
ii) non massive wood layers B7, B8, B9
iii) non massive steel layer A3
To determine CLTD,
need to know the wall type = ?

Wall Type

From Table 8-22a (mass

insulation), with
principal wall material =
heavy concrete C5 (Table

secondary wall material
= stucco,

and 𝑅 = 8.37 𝐵𝑡𝑢
We have Wall Type = 7
Step 3 10

Determine CLTD and Cooling Load

For West wall Type 7, from Table 8-19,
CLTD at 17 h = 34 F

From Table 8-19, for the west wall: 𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 17 = 34℉ 𝑎𝑡 1700 ℎ
30
𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 17 𝑐𝑜𝑟 = 34 + 78 − 79 + 94 − − 85 = 34 − 1 − 6 • 𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 𝑡 𝑐𝑜𝑟 = 𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 + 78 − 𝑇𝑖 + 𝑡𝑜𝑚 − 85

= 27℉

1 𝐵𝑡𝑢
𝑞ሶ 𝑤 17 = 𝑈𝐴 𝐶𝐿𝑇𝐷 17 𝑐𝑜𝑟 = ∗ 1 ∗ 27 = 3.22 at 1700 h
