SUGAR… Have you got a sweet tooth?

Everybody loves something sweet. Who doesn´t enjoy cakes, chocolates or biscuits?
But did you know that there is sugar in a lot of the food we eat these days? Sugar is added to orange juice, breakfast
cereal and fizzy drinks. No surprise there. But what about cans of tomatoes, cans of beans or cold meat? Do you think
there is any sugar in them? Well, the surprising answer is “yes”. And we can add a lot of other processed food to the list,
such as yoghurt, pizza and bread.
So where does sugar come from? Sugar comes from a plant called sugarcane. Sugarcane isn´t easy to grow. It needs lots
of water, good soil and bright sunshine. The sugarcane grows taller and taller and the juice inside the stalk grows sweeter
and sweeter. It takes between eight months and twenty-two months for the sugarcane to be ready for harvest. At that
point, workers can cut down the sugarcane stalks. They use machines to crush the stalks and squeeze out all the sweet
juice. Next, the juice boils in large pots where it forms a sticky mass of small grains and syrup. More machines separate
the grains from the syrup to produce sugar grains.
