Descriptive Paragraphs

Text Comprehension and Production B.U.2

Descriptive paragraphs…

 Help the reader picture in his

or her mind the person, place,
or thing you describe in the
text.

 Use words that create an

image and help the reader
see, touch, feel, smell, or taste
the topic that you are
describing.
Structure
The same 3 main parts of any other paragraph: topic sentence,
supporting sentences, and concluding sentence.

• Topic sentence introduces the item to be described. It also may

include the general feeling about the item.
• Supporting sentences give some background information about
the item, give descriptive details about how it looks, smell, feels,
or tastes. It may also describe more in detail how the writer feels
about the item
• Concluding sentence restates the topic sentence with different
words.
Developing your ideas

Use specific language.

Help the reader create a clear
mental image of the item. For
example:

 General: We heard a noise.

 Specific: we heard the
sound of breaking glass.
The Best Place to Visit

California is the most wonderful place to visit because of its

variety of weather and its beautiful nature. Visitors to California
can find any weather they like. They can find cool temperatures in
the summer; also they can find warm weather in the winter. They
can find places that are difficult for humans to live in the summer
because they are so hot. Or they can find places closed in the winter
because of the snow. On the other hand, visitors can find the nature
they like. They can find high mountains and low valleys. Visitors can
find a huge forest, a dead desert, and a beautiful coast. So
California is the most wonderful place to visit because of its
weather and nature.

Coordinate Adjectives
Sometimes a series of adjectives requires commas, but sometimes
it doesn't. What makes the difference?

When you reorder the series or insert and between them, they still
make sense.

‐ The tall, creamy, delicious milkshake melted on the counter .

‐ The delicious, tall, creamy milkshake melted on the counter .
‐ The tall , creamy, and delicious milkshake melted on the counter.

The series of adjectives still makes sense even though the order has
changed.
