Tutorial 6- Problem 1

Solution:

a) The generator is balanced in phase voltage in Y-star connection, then hence:

𝑉 𝐿12 = 𝑉 𝑃1 − 𝑉 𝑃2 = 220∠0° − 220∠120°

𝑉 𝐿12 = 220[cos(0°) + 𝑗 𝑠𝑖𝑛(0° )] − 220[cos(120° ) + 𝑗 𝑠𝑖𝑛(120° )]
1 √3 3 √3 √3
𝑉 𝐿12 = 220(1 + 𝑗 0 ) − 220 (− + 𝑗 ) = ∗ 220 − 𝑗 ∗ 220 = 220 (√3 − 𝑗)
2 2 2 2 2
(√3 − 𝑗) ≡ 2∠−30° Im

1) 𝑽 𝑳𝟏𝟐 = 220 √3 ∠−30° = 381.051 ∠−30° 𝑉

*So 𝑉 𝐿𝑚𝑛 = √3 (𝑉𝑃𝑚 )∠−30° ) , hence:

𝑉 𝐿23 = 𝑉 𝑃2 − 𝑉 𝑃3 = 220∠120° − 220∠240°

𝑉 𝐿23 = 220[cos(120°) + 𝑗 𝑠𝑖𝑛(120° )] − 220[cos(240° ) + 𝑗 𝑠𝑖𝑛(240° )]
1 √3 1 √3
𝑉 𝐿23 = 220 (− + 𝑗 ) − 220 (− − 𝑗 ) = 0 + 𝑗 220√3 = 381.051 ∠90° 𝑉
2 2 2 2

𝑽 𝑳𝟐𝟑 = 381.05 ∠(120° − 30°) = 381.051 ∠90° 𝑉

𝑉 𝐿31 = 𝑉 𝑃3 − 𝑉 𝑃1 = 220∠240° − 220∠0°

𝑉 𝐿31 = 220[cos(240°) + 𝑗 𝑠𝑖𝑛(240° )] − 220[cos(0° ) + 𝑗 𝑠𝑖𝑛(0° )]
1 √3 3 √3 √3
𝑉 𝐿31 = 220 (− − 𝑗 ) − 220(1 − 𝑗 0 ) = 220 (− ) − 𝑗 220 = 220 (−√3 − 𝑗)
2 2 2 2 2
(√3 − 𝑗) ≡ 2∠−150°
𝑽 𝑳𝟑𝟏 = 220 √3 ∠−150° ≡ 220 √3 ∠(360° − 150° ) = 381.051 ∠210° 𝑉

2) *𝑽 𝑳𝟑𝟏 = 381.05 ∠(240° − 30°) = 381.051 ∠210° 𝑉

1) 𝑽𝒛𝒍𝟏 = 𝑽 𝑳𝟏𝟐 = 381.051 ∠−30° (𝑜𝑟 ∠330°) 𝑉

2) 𝑽𝒛𝒍𝟐 = 𝑽 𝑳𝟑𝟏 = 381.051 ∠210° 𝑉
3) 𝑽𝒛𝒍𝟑 = 𝑽 𝑳𝟐𝟑 = 381.051 ∠90° 𝑉

b) The phase currents on the load end:

c) Line currents in transmission lines:

1) 𝑰𝑳𝟏 = 𝐼𝑃1 − 𝐼𝑃2 = 9.526∠330° − 12.702∠270°

≈ 𝟖. 𝟐𝟓𝟎 + 𝒋𝟕. 𝟗𝟑𝟗 𝑨 ≅ 11.449∠43.9° 𝐴

2) 𝑰𝑳𝟐 = 𝐼𝑃3 − 𝐼𝑃1 = 19.053∠45° − 9.526∠330°

≈ 𝟓. 𝟐𝟐𝟑 + 𝒋𝟏𝟖. 𝟐𝟑𝟔 𝑨 ≅ 18.969∠74.018° 𝐴

3) 𝑰𝑳𝟑 = 𝐼𝑃2 − 𝐼𝑃3 = 12.702∠270° − 19.053∠45°

≈ −𝟏𝟑. 𝟒𝟕𝟑 − 𝒋𝟐𝟔. 𝟏𝟕𝟓 𝑨 ≅ 29.438∠ − 117.236° 𝐴

d) 𝑰 = 𝑰𝑳𝟏 + 𝑰𝑳𝟐 + 𝑰𝑳𝟑

𝑰 = (8.250 + 5.223 − 13.473) + 𝑗(7.939 + 8.236 − 26.175) = 𝟎 𝑨

*or you might not get zero in a magnitude number but a small value which is negligible.

The result 0A or close to it is expected for unbalance load system.

This connection has no problem with the unbalanced load and thirds harmonics. The delta connection
provided balanced phase on the star-Y side and provided a balanced path for the circulation of third
harmonics without the use of the neutral wire.
