Image 43: 1864 Civil War Service Card, Lewis Johnston

Lewis Johnston, compiled military record (private, 54th Kentucky Infantry), “Compiled Service Records of
Volunteer Union Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Kentucky;” digital image, Fold3
(https://www.fold3.com : accessed 2 May 2021), citing NARA microfilm publication M397, roll 461. This
was the only military record found for Lewis Johnston. However, it appears he did not serve. From the
information, he apparently volunteered for the 54th on 29 September 1864. However, he did not muster
in—hence the lack of information in the “muster” blanks and the reason the company assignment is also
blank. The notation at the bottom, “Entry cancelled by line” was not a phrase for which the researcher
could find a ready definition. Because requests for clarification from Fold3, the Kentucky National Guard
had not been answered as of this report, the researcher elected to leave it out of the formal report, but
include the image due to its genealogical value.
