Origin of Language

● The origins of human language will
perhaps remain forever obscure. By
contrast the origin of individual
languages have been the subject of very
precise study over the past two
centuries.
● There are about 5000 languages spoken
in the world today (a third of them in
Africa), but scholars group them
together into relatively few families -
probably less than twenty.
● The theory is that the members of each
linguistic group have descended from
one language, a common ancestor. In
many cases that original language is
judged by the experts to have been
spoken in surprisingly recent times - as
little as a few thousand years ago.
● Our ancestors were probably speaking a
million years ago, but with a slower
delivery, a smaller vocabulary and
above all a simpler grammar than we
are accustomed to.
● The origin of language in the human
species has been the topic of scholarly
discussions for several centuries. In
spite of this, there is no consensus on
the ultimate origin or age of human
language.
● One problem makes the topic difficult
to study is the lack of direct evidence.
● Many argue that the origins of language
probably relate closely to the origins of
modern human behavior, but there is
little agreement about the implications
and directionality of this connection
Theories concerning the origins of spoken
● Bow-wow. The bow-wow or cuckoo
theory, which Max Müller attributed to
the German philosopher Johann
Gottfried Herder, saw early words as
imitations of the cries of beasts and
birds.
● Pooh-pooh. The Pooh-Pooh theory saw
the first words as emotional
interjections and exclamations triggered
by pain, pleasure, surprise, etc.
● Ding-dong. Müller suggested what he
called the Ding-Dong theory, which
states that all things have a vibrating
natural resonance, echoed somehow by
man in his earliest words.
● Yo-he-ho. The yo-he-ho theory claims
language emerged from collective
rhythmic labor, the attempt to
synchronize muscular effort resulting in
sounds such as heave alternating with

● Ta-ta. This did not feature in Max
Müller's list, having been proposed in
1930 by Sir Richard Paget. According to
