1.

Find the friction head of the pipe using the formula:

L
h f ( pipe )= ×fw
100

Where
L is the length of the discharge line,
h f is the friction head
f w is the water friction head in the hose

From table 9.8, given flow of 250 gal/min and hose size of 3in, the water friction is:
f w =14.8

Given discharge line of 80ft (substitute to L) and f w =14.8:

80
h f ( pipe )= ×14.8=11.84 ft
100

2. Find the friction head of the hose:

L
h f (hose )= ×fw
100
Given length of hose L = 20 ft:
20
h f (hose )= ×14.8=2.96 ft
100

3. Find the total head using the formula:

Total head=h static+ hf (hose) +h f ( pipe )

The static head is:

h static=10 ft+ 30 ft=40 ft

Therefore
Total head=40+2.96 +11.84

Total head=54.8 ft
4. Minimum pump size

The total head is 54.8 ft and the height of pump above source is 10 ft

Find these values in table 9-9. Select Model 20-M

Capacity of 20−M =290− ( 54.8−50

60−50 )
(290−255)

Capacity of Model 20−M =273.2 gal /min

Since the required pumping volume is only 250 gal/min the capacity of Model 20-M Pump is
sufficient. Therefore, we choose this model.
