GP HOUSE
Bashundhara R/A, Dhaka

The growing risk of climate change caused by

greenhouse gas emissions poses new
challenges for contemporary countries. The
development of economies is generally linked to
the increase in the levels of greenhouse gas
emissions. Consumption and demand for energy
keep growing and most of the energy is
obtained from non-renewable resources.
Energy is essential for an economy because it
represents a production input in various
industries and sectors.
Long-term energy and cost savings: An
energy-efficient building has the advantage of
reducing energy, water and maintenance costs.
Reduction of emissions and overall
environmental impact: Energy-efficient
buildings emit less greenhouse gases thanks to
their reduced dependence on fossil fuels.

From the above discussion, energy efficiency for

a commercial building is more important to me
in terms of sustainability and economic benefit
which is now already being practiced by Volume
Zero. GP House is a perfect example of a
sustainable building in Dhaka which inspires us
to build sustainable buildings. As Dhaka is
growing more and works as a commercial hub,
sustainability should be practiced more here. In
this case, cost-effective energy efficiency
improvements can have positive
macroeconomic impacts, boosting economic
activity and often leading to increased
employment. Energy efficiency reduces the
amount of energy needed to deliver services,
such as mobility, lighting, heating and cooling.
GP House has 0% of CFC in HVAC system and low voc materials have been used in this building.
Co-generation which has been used in GP House also known as ‘Combined Heat & Power’ or CHP,
is an eco-friendly electricity generation method that aims to capture all the heat lost in the
conventional electricity process and utilize it effectively.

The major steps are :

1. A fuel is added to the prime mover - this fuel may be diesel, gas or biogas, or other renewable
fuels available
2. The fuel is burnt by the prime mover in a variety of ways, depending on the type of engine (for
example, if it is a combustion engine then the fuel will be burned by ordinary combustion)
3. The alternator/generator is connected to the prime mover and uses its driveshaft as its energy
source, producing electricity from rotational energy (the amount it produces will depend on the
size of the system)
4. A heat recovery system collects all the applicable heat from the engine and generator that is
usable
5. A cooling system dissolves any of the heat that can not be used
6. The combustion and ventilation air systems carry out any waste gases from the system that are
left
