Exercise #1. “Doctor for a Day “
A. Pretend that you are a doctor for a day. A patient asks you about using the calendar
method to prevent pregnancy. When you asked about her history of menstrual cycle over
the last six months, her monthly period is a little irregular. Her menstrual cycle were as
follows: 26, 27, 25, 26, 28, and 29. Calculate her fertile period so you can assist her and
his husband in their family planning.

First day of fertile phase 25-18= 7

Last day of fertile phase 29-11= 18

Therefore, her fertile period is between the ___7_th and ___18_th days, and she should
avoid sex between these days of the cycle.
C. Another patient with the same situation comes in and tells you that over the last six
months, her monthly period is a little irregular. Her menstrual cycles were as follows: 29,
29, 30, 26, 28, and 27. Calculate her fertile period so you can assist her and his husband
in their family planning.

Last day of fertile phase 30-11= 19

Therefore, her fertile period is between the __8_th and __19_th days, and she should
avoid sex between these days of the cycle.
D. Before each of your patients left your clinic, they asked why it is important to be aware of
one’s fertility period. What would you tell them? What good does’ family planning or birth
control give them? Cite at least five (5) advantages so you can convince them to take
family planning seriously. Use the space provided for you answer.
1. Advantages of having a family planning are the prevention of HIV/AIDS, as well as
other sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs). Improved access to condoms for both men
and women minimizes the spread of STIs, including HIV.

2. Family planning may be able to help to decrease this cause of death. And it lowers the
chance of female maternal death, particularly during labor and delivery, since maternal
death is a common cause of death.

3. It encourages couples to communicate and share responsibilities.

4. Burdens the parents' responsibility in supporting the family and can give all the care
and love to their children
5. The parents can give enough provision and basic needs to their children such as food,
shelter and education.
