Globalization Essay

In general globalization is the sharing of culture, and money, and products, between countries
that is happening because of international trade, and advances in transportation and
communication. You might think globalization is a recent development, but international trade
has influenced changes across borders for centuries. Silk and spice trade routes throughout East
Asia that began as early as 1st century BCE, introduced different cultures and linked the
economies in different nations. As did the English and Dutch shipping empires in the 16th
century. Globalization is also a social process where people become more and more aware of
other cultures and peoples, across geographical political and social borders. The economic
interdependence of different countries, as well as advancements in communication technology,
and the progress of technology in general, have all contributed to globalization. Theories we
have on globalization like “World-systems Theory” focuses on the importance of the world as a
unit, rather than looking at individual countries which it divides the world into three regions like
core countries, periphery countries and semi-periphery countries. Core countries tend to be
economically diversified, industrialized, and relatively independent of outside control. Periphery
countries tend to have a relatively weak government, they only depend on only one type of
economic activity like extraction of raw materials and has a high percentage of poor and
uneducated people as well as small upper classes which controls most of the economy. These
type of countries are greatly influenced by core countries and transnational corporations which
then can harm the future of economic potentials of the periphery countries. Semi-periphery
countries make up the middle ground between core and periphery countries. Although they are
not dominant in international trade but they have a relatively diversified and well developed
economy. There are different ways of looking at globalization too, such as the hyper globalist
perspective sees globalization as a legitimate process, a new age in human history. Countries’
economies become interdependent as the nations states themselves become significantly less
important. The many individual countries become one global society, though other people don’t
agree whether this is good or bad. The skeptical perspective is critical of globalization, and
considers today’s international processes as becoming regionalized rather than globalized.
Countries borders are not becoming less important. The third world countries aren’t being
integrated into the global economy with the same benefits as first world countries. Skeptics don’t
believe that the current economy is leading towards global capitalism. Then you have the
transformationalist perspective which doesn’t have either a specific cause or outcome. They
believe that National Governments are changing, perhaps becoming less important, but difficult
to describe its change so simply. Globalization has caused many changes in society. It has
allowed for international terrorism and civil unrest as different nations are inundated by foreign
cultures. It has also created a world economy where different countries are interdependent on
other countries promoting a global community.

Glocalization Essay

Glocalization is a term that originated from combining the words globalization and
localization. The meaning behind the term is the balance and amalgamation
between local and global components in regards to companies products as well as
carrying out business in relation to both local and global factors. The concept has
led to companies and businesses surfacing globally over time, with many of these
attempting to duplicate their successful business strategies and model in their
domestic markets to the global stage. Nevertheless, companies subsequently began
to apprehend that in order to attain success globally in the long term with their
products and services in various markets, they first need to understand and
integrate the local and contextual dissimilarities with reference to preferences,
culture, rivalry, and further market based aspects. As a result, those various
markets based aspects and the rising link between the domestic factors and the
global view, the term "Glocalization" derived. Glocalization is still a comparatively
new term in business practice as it describes the adaption of a brands service as
well as product in particular to each culture or place in which it is marketed.
Nonetheless, Glocalization in marketing consist of elements such as adjusting
communications and translating messages to consider the local market. We
presume that global marketing system may bring about a coalition of different
cultures but individual identity would not be compromised and people will always
try to keep themselves distinguished from others which would require sustenance
of distinguished features of local culture. Thus, the mix-up of market economy and
local culture is a non-issue.
