Introduction
In the recent years there has been a rapid increase in the number of hearing impaired and
speech disabled victims due to birth defects, oral diseases and accidents. When a speech
impaired person speaks to a normal person, the normal person finds it difficult to understand
and asks the deaf-dumb person to show gesture for his or her needs. Mute persons have their
own language to communicate with us; sign language the only thing is that we need to
understand their language.

Sign language is used by deaf and mute people and it is a communication skills that uses
gestures instead of sound to convey meaning simultaneously combining hands shapes,
orientations and movement of hands, arms or body and facial expression to Express fluidity a
speaker's thoughts. But most of the time normal people find it difficult to understand this sign
language.

The people who can not speak or have lost their ability to speak in some accident, it becomes
difficult for them to convey their message within the society. To over come this, we have come
up with a project called "SMART GLOVES"

Project Summary
The main objective of this product is to help mute people by removing communication barrier
between mute and normal people as majority of normal people don’t understand sign
language.
To minimize this barrier, we propose a device which convert hand gestures into voice which a
normal person can understand.
In this project, flex sensors plays the major role. The glove is fitted with flex sensors along the
length of each finger and thumb. The flex sensor gives output in the form of voltage variation
that varies with degree of bend. The flex sensor output is given to the ADC channel of
microcontroller. It processes the signal and perform analog to digital signal conversion. Further
the proceed data is sent in a wireless manner to the receivers section. In this section the
gesture is recognized and corresponding output is displayed on LCD and simultaneously a
speech output is play backed through speaker. The portability of this project is major
advantage. Thus, with the help of this project the barrier faced by these people in
communicating with the society can be reduced to a great extent.

Market Targeting
Target market is a set of buyers sharing common needs or characteristics that a company
decides to serve.
Based on the results of our survey, our target market which is mute people as we have
discussed in the segmentation. Preferred the product to be comfortable to wear, should be
fairly priced, resistant to common damages.
Target market of Smart Gloves for now sees no competitor in the market, as it is entirely new
and innovative form of technology in the market.
Smart Gloves however will only be targeting Pakistan for now.

Segmentation Analysis
Segmentation for Smart Gloves will be based on demographic, geographic and economic
sectors. Our product will be for mute people based on their age, education, occupation and
financial status.

Demographic segmentation
Demographic factors are the most popular basis for segmenting customer groups. One reason is that
consumer needs, wants and usage rates often vary closely with demographic variables. Marketers must
know segment demographic characteristics in order to access the size of the target market and to reach
it efficiently.

Income Segmentation: We will target affluent customers with convenience services and products.
In income segmentation we will divide the market into different income groups.

● Middle Class: whose annual income is 4-5 lacs

● Upper middle: whose annual income lie in the range 8-10 lacs
● Upper Class: Whose annual income lie in the range 15-20 lacs
● Elite Class: Whose annual income exceeds 20 lacs
Educational segmentation: As our product is innovative and requires certain education level also
familiarity with sign language so educational segmentation is very important for us. So we will divide our
market in the following ways:

● We will target potential customers who have at least matric level education.
● Should be familiar with sign language.

Statistics:
● Total population of Pakistan is 212 million.
● Mute people population: Approximately 8.5 lacs
● Mute population familiar with sign language: 10,000

Positioning
Our product positioning is based on the concept that deprived segment of the society should be
targeted who are generally ignored in society. So we don’t have much products that specifically
serve value to mute people. So keeping all these facts we will create value for mute people. We
will have to build the image of our company as it is entirely new. We will have to advertise in a
way that can create a certain image of our company and we will also try to build long term
relationship with them.

Marketing Mix
Marketing mix, also known as the four P’s of marketing includes; Product, Price, Promotion and
Place.

Product
The main objective of this product is to help mute people by removing communication barrier
between mute and normal people as majority of normal people don’t understand sign
language.
To minimize this barrier, we propose a device which convert hand gestures into voice which a
normal person can understand.

Main Components
● Wireless Glove
● Flex Sensor
● Accelerometer
This device consists of a wireless Glove, consisting of flex sensors and accelerometer. These
sensors sense the movement of hands and fingers. This system consists of a speech synthesizer
circuit which converts the movements of hand into real time speech output and a display will
give the text for the corresponding gesture. The text and voice output being in English. So, this
device provides efficient way of communication for mute people and normal people.

An automatic sign language recognition system has been developed using Random Forest
Classifier as a machine learning algorithm, and to translate the sign alphabets and common
words into text and sound. A glove circuit has been designed with flex sensors, 3-axis
accelerometer and gyroscope to capture the gesture or sign data. The finger bend data had
been obtained from flex sensors on each finger while the accelerometer and gyroscope
provided the trajectories of the hand motion. The data from the sensors has been passed
through trained model to recognize the gesture. The main purpose of the Smart Glove is to
provide an ease of sharing basic ideas, minimize communication gap and an easier
collaboration for the mute people.

Question 1: What is your age?
Question 2: How did you get mute?
Question 3: What’s your qualification?
Question 4: Are you familiar with sign language?
Question 5: What’s your monthly income?
Question 6: If a product is established for your communication, how much are you willing to
pay?

Promotion
Social media: As promotion through YouTube is the new trend so will be advertising in YouTube by
collaborating with vloggers. It maybe a little expensive as we will have to pay the collaborators for their
time and cooperation. The estimated cost is around 20,000 per video.

Bloggers: As blogs are an online journal or diary so bloggers write contents on the blog. Now it has
become a new trend to pay bloggers to use your product and then share their experience with their
readers. This the new promotional strategy used by companies to promote their products and it is quite
economical so we will pay different bloggers to write about our products to reach many potential
customers. Estimated cost will be around 3000 per blogg.

PLACE:
Places where our product will be available and reach the end customers at their convenience Retail
Pharmacy: As it is a medical device for the disabled so our product will be available in all retail shops
that sell all medical device and stuff. Some examples of these retail shops can be D.Watson and Shaheen
in Isb-rwp region, also many other small pharmacy.
