European Union and one of its seven
institutions. t represents the second-largest
democratic electorate in the world and the
largest trans-national democratic electorate

Since 1979, the Parliament has been directly elected


every five years by the citizens of the European Union
through universal suffrage. The first thing the
newly-elected MEPs have to do once they meet in
plenary at the beginning of July will be to choose who
will be the new president of the European Parliament.
