ha- The Single line Hook-on dual scoop Clamshell is specially designed for cranes with

crane. Just hook the grab on the crane with sufficient lifting capacity and your grab is

ready for operation. In order to minimise material loss and pollution of the environ-
ment, single rope grabs can be equipped with closed shells. Each single rope grab is
provided with a lock mechanism to secure the closing of the grab. To open the grab,
this mechanism must be unlocked.

- TGS offers 3 different systems to open the grab:

1. Hand tripped (Manual Control).
To open this type of grab you have to pull, by hand

nge
or separate winch, a separate rope. Mid-air opening
2. Touch Down (Automatic).
To open this type of grab, you have to land the grab

nd-
onto the cargo or hopper to unlock the system.
3. Radio remote control with stop-start.

Stop Start provides the opportunity to stop and start
the opening of the shells several times.

The Single Line Radio Remote Control ìHook onî Clamshell Grab can simply be
Hooked on to your crane with sufficient lifting capacity and height, without any acces-
sories. It operates as follows: The unlocking system for opening the grab is operated
by Radio Remote Control. The advantage of the Radio Remote Controlled operation is
that you can open the grab in ìMid Airî and stop and start the opening of the grab
several times.

The grab is lowered on the bulk in opened position.

The sliding block is in upper position, the sliding block must be lowered towards the
lower block carrier. The sliding block moves over the hooks inside the lower block.
The hooks move back and the locking lever falls between the hooks. Thus the hooks
hold the sliding block on its place. While the sliding block moves upwards, and thus
also the lower block carrier, the grab will close. For opening the grab, the grab must
be lowered on the bulk (in closed position). By doing this, the hooks inside the lower
block carrier will move backwards for a little, so that the locking lever will be free for
release. With the help of a release mechanism inside the head block carrier, the loc- Technical description

shells depending on the job and the type of material to be handled. The grabs are
manufactured of high wear resistant steels. All bearings are heavy-duty and sealed for
high performance.

Optional
The shells can be executed with spill plates to reduce capacity. This will give you an
advantage when bulk materials with various densities are (dis)charged. This can be
calculated to the biggest capacities possible in combination with the lifting capacity of
your crane.

The closed shells are to minimize dust clouds when the content of the load is powder.
In many countries closed shells are mandatory to avoid pollution. The dust vents on
top of the shells prevent a vacuum.

Mechanical (Line) grabs
Four rope mechanical scissor grab
This exclusive concept is popular with companies that continuously transfer large volumes of coal and ore. It is easy to use, requires
little to no maintenance and always works. The scissors grab is most efficient in combination with automated, computer controlled
unloading installations (bridge cranes etc.) A scissors grab has an incredibly long life-span, often up to twice as long as other grabs
in its class.

The unique closing mechanism of the scissors grab is very fast and this has the effect, that short cycle times are possible because
the grab closes very fast. A very low centre of gravity means the grab is highly stable and there is less loss of time as a result of the
grab falling over. The large ‘grab surface’ of the scissors grab means it has a better ‘cleaning-up capacity whereby for the last 30 %
of bulk in a ship holds, hardly any use has to be made of bulldozers or manpower. The scissors grab can be opened to near hori-
zontal level, whereby the grab can get closer to the bunker or delivery chute. This minimises loss of load and air pollution. There are
many other differences of technical character, material use and design whereby the scissor grab offers characteristics and advanta-
ges not present in other grab. So, when major demands have to be made to transfer large quantities of coal and ore fast and effi-
ciently, with a maximum user-friendliness, minimal maintenance and downtime of the grab, this grab is the right choice.

11
Mechanical digging/ dredging
clamshell grabs
These grabs are specially designed for heavy duty digging and dredging purposes.
The grabs can be executed with open or closed shells depending on the job and the
type of material to be handled. The shells are executed with integrated teeth in the
knives. The grabs are manufactured of high wear resistant steels. All bearings are
heavy-duty and sealed for high performance.

The Grabs can be executed in a Two- or Four Rope operation.

Optional is to inner dress the shells with Stainless Steel (RVS) for an optimal flow of
the material.

Mechanical roundnose grabs
The mechanical round nose grab is specially designed for heavy-duty dredging and
digging purposes. For very hard soils mixed with rocks. The Grabs can be executed in
a Two- or Four Rope operation.
The turning points are equipped with heavy duty bearings. The bearings are double
sealed to prevent entering dirt into the bearings.

Mechanical (Line) grabs

The lever arms are reinforced to avoid bending. The inner side of the scales is smooth,
without any abrupt transitions. This minimises the resistance during the digging in to
the bottom and also makes it easier to unload sticky materials like clay.
The knives are manufactured in a round shape for more strength and more impact into
the very hard bottom grounds.
For hard layers and different to penetrate materials, we recommend knives with teeth.
The grabs are executed with knives with interchangeable teeth.

Mechanical level-cut
clamshell grabs
This type of grab is specially designed for dredging of polluted mud. The advantage
compared to a normal dredging grab is that has a low turbulence when lifting the
grab, it has a bigger foot print and because the grab will close almost horizontally it is
possible to remove mud from the bottom very accurately. By positioning the grab you
can remove only the required layer of polluted mud without taking any non polluted
mud. The grab is suitable for dredging mud with a density up to 1.5 t/m3.

(ship board cranes).

If the ships cranes are not executed with accessories yet, The Grab Specialist can
also supply accessories which need to be mounted on your ships cranes for operation
of the grabs.

Sometimes when you for example are chartering various ships, it is not allowed to
mount the accessories on the ships cranes, therefore we have also designed an alter-
native: “Deck Towers”. The Deck Towers just have to be put on the deck of the ship
and are equipped with all necessary accessories for operation of the grab. The Deck

ers Grapples
ng The Grapples are constructed as follows: The claws which serve to pick up the rocks,

uc-
are attached by means of a shaft to the stick of the excavator. The shaft serves also
as turning point of the upper claw. The claws are made of high wear resistant steel.
The upper claw is driven by the original cylinder of the excavator to the claw. The claw

a-
can be opened and closed by pulling the cylinder rod in or out.

Because of all the different stick executions of the excavators, these grabs are manu-

-
factured according to the specifications of the customer. Executions are available
upon request.

Digging, rock & backhoe
buckets
The backhoe buckets can be manufactured in any weight, execution and capacity
you require. The backhoe buckets are commonly used for digging, dredging and rock
handling. They can be made to fit on every specific crane.

The grabs can be manufactured in any

weight, execution and capacity required

Diaphragm wall grabs
The Diaphragm Wall Grabs are the best solution to excavate diaphragm walls in all soil
conditions up to a soil hardness of 70 mPA as light chiselling work is possible. The
MDWG series of diaphragm wall grabs is available with grab extensions for a total
length of 4 to 16 m and also with extra ballast to reach a total weight of up to 35 ton
for even the most demanding projects.

Jaws may be rectangular or round shape. Jaws, ropes, pulleys and different teeth can
be quickly replaced on site without any problems. All rope and guide pulleys have
adequately dimensioned, maintenance-free bearings filled with grease.

Diaphragm Wall Grabs for digging diaphragm walls by building tunnels etc. Next this
diaphragm wall will be filled with bentonite, because of this there will arise a carrying
and/or a water- sand baffling construction. During the digging a liquid will be added to
support the diaphragm wall. The stability of the diaphragm wall will arise because of
the hydrostatical pressure of the liquid. Digging diaphragm walls will take place at
great depths, 50 metres or more isn’t unusual. The
demands of the bearings, of all turning parts are
very high, because this grab is constantly wor-
king in a mix of sand and liquid. Therefore
specially closed bearings are being used.
These grabs are manufactured at custo-
mers specifications.

Taglines
The Tagline is made to hold a grab steady regardless of boom angle while the grab
and its load are suspended in air. The Tagline’s operation is completely automatic after
installation.

The Tagline operates on a coil spring system that maintains constant, positive tension
on a grab. The unit mounts on a crane boom and consists of a cable reel, cable wire,
two spring-loaded cylinders and a bell guide fairlead. The fairlead requires no sheaves,
pins or lubrication.

Depending on the size and weight, the taglines can be executed in:
- Single Barrel
- Double Barrel
- Triple Barrel

Deck towers
As an alternative to the crane accessories TGS manufactures, Deck Towers that guide
the electrical power cable from the ship or generator to the grab and keep the cable
under constant tension. These machines are easy to place on deck by strong mag-
nets, fully self-supporting. Sometimes when ships are being chartered it is not allowed
to mount any accessories on the ships cranes. The Deck Towers in this case will offer
you a good alternative.

Chain Puller
The Chain Puller, once secured to a solid surface and connected to a standard power
pack, it is able to develop a pulling power of 300 tons. TGS in-house designing are
able to manufacture units up to 1000 tons pulling force. Chain pullers can also be
placed in series this way you can keep a constant 300 ton power on the chains.

They are used for dragging vessels off the beach or onto barges, rolling vessels onto
breakwater or vertically lifting of sunken ships.

Specials
for the Maasvlakte 2
Harbour of Rotterdam
This Block Clamp is specially developed and produ-
ced for PUMA by TGS for placing concrete blocks
with a weight of approx. 42 ton in to the sea at the
2nd Maasvlakte by Rotterdam NL.

TGS produced all grabs for the 2nd Maasvlakte ,

about 25 in total. This civil engineering project jointly
managed by Van Oord and Boskalis, they will reclaim
land for the use of the Port of Rotterdam. One of the
main tasks for TGS was to restack 20.000 blocks
weighing 43.000 kg . The blocks which were used for
the creation of the first defence wall in the early 1930,
needed to be lifted out of the water and realigned. The
grab/clams for replacing had to be designed at a
maximum empty weight of 5mt.
