Homes of the future to be a totally immersive multimedia

experience
Walls to become constantly changing screens

The home interior of the future will be a dazzling, constantly changing screen-scape of
televisions and projections, according to a panel of technology experts and trend
forecasters gathered together by ntl Telewest.

With the way we watch television changing rapidly with HDTV, TiVo and Sky+, as well
as TV on demand, the boffins have projected what our homes will look like in 2020.

The traditional TV set will be as outdated as the black and white televisions of the past.
Instead, the walls themselves will becomes screens, as video wallpaper and tiles take
over.

Thanks to flexible screens, like the ones that Epson has developed recently, news could
be watched on the back of a cereal box, while internet content could be viewed directly
from the cover of a magazine.

One TV screen could show two different programmes depending on the angle that it's
viewed, so that two viewers could watch what they want and hear it clearly thanks to
"advanced narrow directionally projected sound".

TV on demand would mean that viewers can decide on plot twists in a soap opera and
cast new virtual actors.

Little chips worn on your clothes can encode what programme you're watching, so that
screens change to keep up with your movements from room to room; they would also
change the wallpaper effects, lighting, and object positioning on the walls to your
personal preferences.

Entertainment and Culture Working Group

This Working Group focuses on Virtual Reality / Virtual Environment entertainment

applications and expectations within the European market for the coming ten years.
Such applications (3D games, art visualised representations) have served as the first
communication means among VR applications and society and are still the most easy-
to-conceive.

This WG aims to provide the community with all the information to raise awareness
about the next generation of entertainment applications. Additionally, this workgroup
aims in bringing the INTUITION Network of Excellence with needs and solutions for
developing future applications. This workgroup will investigate:

 the need of the market and will define the requirement of different entertainment
platforms;
 the Virtual Reality technologies that entertainment applications may take further
advantage of;
 typical future Entertainment platforms in order to apply the study results of the above two
points on more concrete use cases

Virtual reality systems can simulate everything from a walk-through of a building prior to
construction to simulations of aircraft flight and three dimensional computer games.

Immersive technologies and virtual reality are powerful and compelling computer applications
by which humans can interface and interact with computer generated environments in a way that
mimics real life sense engagement.

Although mostly known for its application in the entertainment industry the real promise lies in
such fields as medicine, science, engineering, oil exploration, data visualization and the military
to name just a few.

As 3D and immersive technology becomes more integrated and available for a wide range of
applications. It l requires well-designed user interfaces and innovative content for the next
generation of computer games and integrated technology like mobile devices, distributed web
systems and desktop applications.
The example images for immersive multimedia in entertainment
HD is important in giving game developers access to a better, more standardized, medium for
relating their visuals, but it is even more important to the future of the industry. To further abuse
a marketing term, HDTVs are the center of the trend towards "convergence" of consumer
multimedia electronics and high-power home computing. A progressive-scan HDTV is really
just a wide-screen computer monitor, that tends to be much bigger and cheaper than such
monitors were in the past. As the marketplace starts to look at their computers and their
entertainment components as one and the same, less as idiot-boxes and more as productivity
devices with "fun thrown in," it will become much less of a leap to market a high-end gaming
PC/console as a gaming device with powerful productivity and media tools given as a bonus.
Right now gaming PCs seem more like a work-box with overly expensive game components
inside, and consoles seem like just another TV attachment that "lets" you play games offered by
that specific console maker. The less boxes consumers have to buy, the more they can spend on
one box, and the more likely it will be that they want to play the latest and greatest games on that
box. As standards converge around a one-box-of-all-trades model, it will become much easier for
game developers to reach a larger audience. As long as those standards remain open, and
multiple hardware and software vendors compete to be the ultimate tool in standards compliance,
equipment and software costs can only go lower for both the consumer and the developer
communities. Lower cost means better accessibility, to a wider population, which is a boon to
any industry. When we start talking about video games less in terms of market saturation, and
more in terms of social ubiquity, that will be the first sign of success. HDTV, as an international
and open visual interface standard, is central to that progression.
